U.S. Naval Academy (Naval Arch Mar Eng.)
University of Hawaii (Manoa) (Master's)
University of Pennsylvania (Wharton School) (MBA)
I am one of the few people in the entire world to have scored an 800 on the SAT (revised standards). This unique differentiation has helped me to gain entrance to exceptionally selective schools like the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. To be honest, my I.Q is average. However, I have made up for this deficiency over my entire life through very hard work, perseverance, and by focusing upon basic math and science issues. Understanding a handful of basic concepts allows much more complicated issues to be understood with a huge improvement in test scores/performance.
I have four children; two in elementary school and two in College. Of the 4 children, two have had learning issues and required intensive tutoring. In fact, one of my children had a severe brain injury while very young and was relegated by several esteemed school systems as incapable of ever being able to read, write or perform basic life skills. To the astonishment (and imputed embarrassment of Special Educators), my son graduated from one of the country's top schools with a Standard Diploma, was featured on the front page of the Washington Post as a unique success story, and recently graduated from Lynchburg College (History Major). He should complete his Masters in Teaching (History) from Liberty University in Spring 2015 with a 3.4 GPA. Each of my children as well as myself had untapped potential that required nurturing. The same is true of their respective test scores, which were dramatically improved as a result of their own hard work and the assistance I provided.
Last, I am also an athlete with a modest degree of acclaim and have been told that I am a fairly inspirational coach. Yet, as a youngster I was the one sitting on the sidelines and was often the last one picked for various teams. This situation was not acceptable and, as a high school student I opted to change my athletic abilities. Today I am one of just a handful of people who can claim to have competed in dozens of national and international athletic events, including dozens of triathlons; 4 Ironman races; nearly 20 marathons and dozens of shorter races; competitive power lifting and bodybuilding; Rowing (sweeps and ergs); Contender on the American Gladiators' TV show.
My athletic and academic natural abilities share a common theme; they were each mediocre at best. My performance and capability was dramatically improved to a level far beyond logical predictions as a result of work ethic and focus. I am confident of conveying this attitude to my students/athletes.
"Yes", I'm pretty good at math, physics, SAT tests and a handful of academic subjects. This ability is required but is by no means all that is necessary to help you. I am not offering to "teach" anybody anything. What I am offering to do is to help accelerate the learning process of anybody studying "anything"....and do further enhance their overall level of sucess through an approach that builds confidence and expands horizons.
Academically, I have two B.S. degrees from the U.S. Naval Academy, both in Engineering. My M.S. is from the Univ. of Hawaii (Manoa) in Mechanical Engineering. My MBA is from Wharton at the Univ. of Penn. My Ph.D. (Conflict Analysis and Resolution) is in progress. I am a registered P.E. and have lived/travelled throughout the world as an international business consultant. I was most recently in Afghanistan for the greater portion of 2014. My past career also involves stints on Wall Street as a venture capitalist, France as a nuclear engineer, and the U.S. Navy as a nuclear submarine officer.
I have recently moved back to Hawaii having lived here for 10 years, 20 years ago. I am maintaining two households as my family and younger kids are still back in D.C. Hence, I am looking to augment my income. I work full time during the week at a large firm in Downtown, Honolulu, and live in Kahala. Please keep me in mind should tutoring needs arise. Best of luck to you and/or your children, regardless.

I'm struggling to with timed math questions on the ASVAB test and Mark was very patient and thought me simple and straight forward ways to answer math questions on the ASVAB test! So far, this is our first initial session and I'm looking forward to more sessions with him to help me get the GT score I need to open doors and opportunities within my military career :)
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experience in Competitive Bodybuilding from 1985 to 1995; vast majority of experience was in Hawaii. Competed in nearly 20 contests, including Mr. Hawaiian Islands where I placed 5th and Mr. Big Island where I placed 3rd. Competed mostly as a Middle Weight or Light Heavy Weight.
Competetive Powerlifting from 1985 to 1995; vast majority of experience was in Hawaii. Competed in nearly a dozen contests. Best lifts were 515 DeadLift, 505 Squat and 325 Bench at 185 pounds.
I owned Star Fitness in Lynchburg, Virginia from 1990 to 2000. This 8,000 sq. foot facility was the premier facility in the Lynchburg area.
My background in business is extensive and includes several positions of executive leadership with multi-national firms as well as with Venture Capital firms on Wall Street and in Boston. As a venture capitalist I sat on over a dozen boards as a Director and provided coaching/mentoring on various business principles to the CEO's and Presidents of firms overseeing his respective investments.
My numerous business awards include the inaugural Springboard Leadership Award (2000) for my ardent support of women entrepreneurs. I was also recognized in 1996 as a Kauffman Venture Capital Fellow (akin to a White House Fellow or Rhodes Scholar for Entrepreneurship & Venture Capital). I have been featured or quoted in hundreds of publications including the Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, Wired, Red Herring, and many others.
I have an MBA in finance from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania where I also received a fellowship from the Wharton Small Business Development Center (SBDC). While at Wharton working at the SBDC I and 4 others were tasked with providing consulting services to local entrepreneurs. Such assistance include marketing plans, business plans, strategy and financial development.
I have applied for PhD candidacy at the London School of Economics (LSE) to study “Fostering Entrepreneurship among Former Military Personnel; Post-conflict Reconstruction in South Sudan”.
Just to reinforce my background: I am of average intelligence, but through hard work have scored very high on standardized tests. My Math grade on the SAT increased (over 4 tests) from 550 to 800. I intend on bringing this knack for math...and this ability to increase an SAT score to bear on behalf of my students... like yourself. It is not huge secret. It's just a some general guidelines... and lots of hard work!
