About Thomas

I am an experienced, full-time tutor currently tutoring students from 1st grade level up to college level in Honolulu. I tutor a multitude of subjects, including English reading and writing, geometry, algebra, calculus, trigonometry, geography, and standardized tests, such as the SAT, SSAT, and ASVAB. I also help students overcome learning obstacles on their way to acquiring specific skills. My focus is on understanding each student's own learning goals and how he or she likes to work. Instruction is designed around each individual student's specific goals and needs.

I graduated cum laude from Loyola University New Orleans with a Bachelor's in Communications in 2006. I have tutored gifted students, failing students in need of remedial tutoring, working adults, and ESL students. I speak some Cantonese, Spanish, and Mandarin as well.

We can meet at any place you'd like. Common tutoring locations include libraries, students' homes, fast-food restaurants (like McDonald's), and coffee shops- basically, any quiet indoor location. My travel radius is east to Hawaii Kai, west to Pearl City, and windward to Kailua. If I have to travel outside of that radius to meet the student, then I would have to charge extra, depending on exactly how much farther I would have to travel. I work seven days a week, preferably between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

I require a minimum of 1.5 hours per session, as any less time than that would make it not worth the time to make the drive to and from the tutoring site for each session. The average session length is 2 hours, but I have gone as high as 4 hours per session. I also require 24-hour notice before a scheduled session is to be canceled or rescheduled for non-emergency reasons. The reason is that last-minute scheduling changes create a heavy financial burden on a tutor, as expected work and income for that reserved time slot does not materialize. If the student(s) is absent or unable to make the scheduled session for non-emergency reasons and 24-hour notice was not given, then the scheduled session will be charged at its usual rate as if it had occurred in its entirety. Of course, I would prefer if notice was given as soon as it was known that the student(s) would be unable to make it to tutoring.

If you are interested in my help, then please send me an email about the Student's Learning Needs, Grade Level, Where You Would Like To Meet, and Preferred Day of Week and Time, and I will get back to you about when I'm available.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The ACT is a college admissions test that contains English, Math, Reading, and Science sections, plus an optional Writing section, which consists of a scored essay. The English section tests the student’s knowledge of grammar, punctuation, usage, mechanics, style, organization, and rhetorical strategy. I have tutored a few students in the ACT in the past few years.

ACT Math

The ACT is a college admissions test that contains English, Math, Reading, and Science sections, plus an optional Writing section, which consists of a scored essay. The Math section tests the student’s knowledge of pre-algebra, graphs, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. I have tutored a few students in the ACT in the past few years.

ACT Reading

The ACT is a college admissions test that contains English, Math, Reading, and Science sections, plus an optional Writing section, which consists of a scored essay. The Reading section tests the student’s reading comprehension, inference skills, ability to locate details, summarization skills, and ability to retain critical information. I have tutored a few students in the ACT in the past few years.

Algebra 1

Algebra, one of the fundamental areas of mathematics, is a logic system that uses symbols to represent relationships between quantities. It is used to solve all sorts of problems, from accounting to manufacturing. Algebra topics that I tutor include nomenclature, inequalities, word problems, quadratics, substitutions, rational expressions and equations, systems of equations, and many more, as well as all related and prerequisite concepts. I have tutored many students in Algebra over the past several years.

ASVAB

The ASVAB is a battery of multiple choice tests that the United States military uses to determine qualification to enlist in as well as suitability for a variety of positions within the military. The nine ASVAB tests are General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Mathematics Knowledge, Electronics Information, Automotive and Shop Information, Mechanical Comprehension, and Assembling Objects. In particular, the AFQT score, a combination of the Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Mathematics Knowledge scores, is used to determine qualification in enlisting in the military, while certain scores from the nine tests are used in some combination to determine suitability for particular occupations. I have tutored numerous students in the ASVAB over the past several years.

English

Fluency in English is important for many people both born in the United States and other countries. I have tutored many students of all ages and skill levels in English in both the verbal and written form, in expressing oneself as well as understanding others, over the years. I teach a wide variety of English topics, including reading, writing, speaking, and test taking.

Geography

Geography is the study of the Earth and how people interact with it. It includes both human geography and physical geography. Geography topics that I have tutored include meteorology, maps, oceanography, and earth science. I have tutored a few students in Geography in the past several years.

Geometry

Geometry is a fundamental branch of mathematics covered in elementary, intermediate, and high school, college, and training for many careers. Geometry topics that I tutor include points, lines, circles, polygons, graphing, angles, transformations, area, volume, and perimeter, as well as all related and prerequisite concepts. The ideas of geometry are practical in many everyday applications, including construction, design, machinery, sports, and security. I have tutored countless students in Geometry over the past several years.

Grammar

Grammar is a critical part of the English language. Grammar governs the organization and structure of English communication. Grammar topics that I tutor include parts of speech, verb tenses, types of pronouns, punctuation, possessives, clauses, and phrases. I have tutored numerous students in Grammar over the past several years.

Praxis

I have taken the Praxis 1 (now called the Praxis Core) exam and the Praxis 2 (now called the Praxis Subject Assessments) exam in Mathematics: Content Knowledge (the high school Math teacher knowledge test) myself. I scored 186/182/190 on the Praxis 1 (when the maximum score for each section used to be 190) and a 170 on the math Praxis 2 (top 15 percentile). I have also tutored several students on aspects of the Praxis exams over the last few years.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra refers to the collection of mathematics concepts that students should know before learning algebra. Topics include arithmetic, number theory, negative numbers, fractions, percent, decimals, order of operations, factorization, multiples, exponents, and properties of operations. I have tutored many students in prealgebra over the past several years.

Precalculus

Precalculus refers to the collection of mathematics concepts that students should know before learning calculus. Topics include algebra, trigonometry, sets, complex numbers, various kinds of functions, vectors, matrices, limits, and more. I have tutored several students in precalculus over the past several years.

Proofreading

I have proofread for my students many essays, homework assignments, stories, projects, and reports, of various grade levels- up to graduate school level- for spelling, syntax, word choice, punctuation, grammar, and both MLA and APA style documentation. Furthermore, I also work as a freelance writer and editor on the side, so I have had much experience proofreading web copy, resumes, manuscripts, business proposals, and more as well.

PSAT

The PSAT is a preliminary version of the better-known SAT test. The PSAT is most commonly used to determine qualification for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The PSAT contains Math, Critical Reading, and Writing Skills sections. I have tutored a few students in the PSAT in the past several years.

Reading

Reading is a fundamental skill that I have had much experience teaching in the past several years. I have taught reading to students from kindergarten level to high school level. Whether the students were in school or adult non-native English readers, I have helped them improve their pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and ability to retain critical information.

SAT Math

I have had extensive experience tutoring the topics of SAT Math- arithmetic, geometry, algebra, functions, measurements, word problems, percent, ratios, proportions, exponents, absolute value, graphs, fractions, decimals, statistics, probability, and trigonometry- over the past several years.

SAT Reading

I have had much experience teaching SAT Reading topics over the past several years, including fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, decoding syntax and grammar, textual analysis, command of evidence, inferences, summarization, and retaining critical information. I have taught numerous SAT Reading students in the past few years.

SAT Writing

The SAT Writing section is comprised of improving sentences, improving paragraphs, and identifying sentence error questions. The optional SAT essay asks test-takers to analyze how the author of a given passage develops an argument. I have had extensive experience teaching grammar, word choice, organization, argument building, punctuation, and coherence over the past several years.

SSAT

The SSAT is an admissions test used to determine placement in private and independent elementary, intermediate, and high schools. There are three versions of the test: Elementary, Middle, and Upper. Each version is of a different degree of difficulty, but they all contain Quantitative (math), Reading, and Verbal (vocabulary) sections, as well as an unscored writing sample. I have tutored many students in the SSAT over the past several years.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is the section of geometry that studies functions derived from relationships between triangle angles and sides and calculates unknown angles and sides when enough other elements of the triangle are known. It is usually taught in high school or college, is a frequently required prerequisite course to calculus, and has practical applications in astronomy, navigation, and surveying, among other fields. I have tutored several students in trigonometry over the past several years.

Writing

Writing is a fundamental skill that I have had much experience both teaching and practicing over the past several years. I have tutored writing to students from kindergarten level to graduate school level, in topics such as grammar, word choice, punctuation, usage, sentence structure, and both MLA and APA style. I work as a freelance writer and editor on the side, so I have produced and edited much web copy, resumes, manuscripts, business proposals, and more over the years as well.

Great first session

For our first session Thomas assessed my son to see where he was about his understanding of the mathematical concepts. Once he got a better idea of how much my son knew he was able to work with my son teaching him the concepts he needed to know to complete his assignment. My son really likes being tutored by Thomas stating that "he is really smart." So far so good.
