Loyola University, New Orleans (Communications)
I am an experienced tutor currently tutoring students from 1st grade level up to college level in Honolulu. I tutor a multitude of subjects, including English reading and writing, geometry, algebra, calculus, trigonometry, geography, and standardized tests, such as the SAT, SSAT, and ASVAB. I also help students overcome learning obstacles on their way to acquiring specific skills. My focus is on understanding each student's own learning goals and how he or she likes to work. Instruction is designed around each individual student's specific goals and needs.
I graduated cum laude from Loyola University New Orleans with a Bachelor's in Communications in 2006. I have tutored gifted students, failing students in need of remedial tutoring, working adults, and ESL students. I speak some Cantonese, Spanish, and Mandarin as well.
We can meet at any place you'd like. Common tutoring locations include fast-food restaurants (like McDonald's), libraries, students' homes, and coffee shops- basically, any quiet indoor location. My travel radius is east to Hawaii Kai, west to Pearl City, and windward to Kailua. If I have to travel outside of that radius to meet the student, then I would have to charge extra, depending on exactly how much farther I would have to travel. I work seven days a week, preferably between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
I require a minimum of 1.5 hours per session, as any less time than that would make it not worth my time to make the drive to and from the tutoring site for each session. The average session length is 2 hours, but I have gone as high as 4 hours per session. I also require 24-hour notice before a scheduled session is to be canceled or rescheduled for non-emergency reasons. The reason is that last-minute scheduling changes create a heavy financial burden on a tutor, as expected work and income for that reserved time slot does not materialize. If the student(s) is absent or unable to make the scheduled session for non-emergency reasons and 24-hour notice was not given, then the scheduled session will be charged at its usual rate as if it had occurred in its entirety. Of course, I would prefer if notice was given as soon as it was known that the student(s) would be unable to make it to tutoring.
If you are interested in my help, then please send me an email about the Student's Learning Needs, Grade Level, Where You Would Like To Meet, and Preferred Day of Week and Time, and I will get back to you about when I'm available. Reviewed goals - recognized current level and made a plan on how to get to our goals. Highly recommend Thomas to help you achieve what you are trying to get to.
We are so happy with Thomas. He is always well prepared and ever patient, going over concepts and pushing the fundamentals.
Thomas is able to help our son with his education in a manner that we as parents can't. He is patient with him and seems to know whether our son grasps the material or not and what to do and say to help him. Having Thomas in our home once a week for a few hours has been a gift to our whole family!
Thomas has been working with my daughter for only a few short weeks. When he first began, her class was already 3/4 of the year into Algebra 2, and she had only had 2 weeks of classroom time. Now, after about eleven (11) sections, she has not only caught up with her class, but have gone ahead of her class. Thomas is very dedicated to making sure that each subject is taught thoroughly and he will not move on until the student has had a good grasp on that topic. He has been a god sent for us. Thank you so very much Thomas.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
