Brown University (Ivy League) (PhD)
As a single mom on welfare in Oakland, CA, I began my academic career in the community colleges. Through a lot of hard work, I won many fellowships and awards and have several degrees from Ivy League universities. HOWEVER, my priority has always been to help children get the instruction through patience and lots of fun. I always put my daughter first, (which is why I am still working on my dissertation!) This past year I had the opportunity to teach in Providence's housing projects for mostly second and third grade students (I had been teaching undergraduate and graduate programs previously.) I completely fell in love with the job. After all, my students in the Ivy League were already set for life. Teaching these young children (using gummy bears for multiplication!) was an amazing experience for me, and I became close to their families as well. I loved talking to young children about WHEN (not if) they go to college, what would they want to study. I love the interaction of one-on-one tutoring, although I am open to teaching a group. I will be teaching at Roger Williams this fall, but would love to spend the rest of the summer tutoring. Even after I begin teaching, I will still be able to teach in the after school hours. I love my kids, and they can tell. They are always happy to see me and eager to learn. So basically, you get a college professor as a tutor, because I really believe in kids, and love watching them grow. And I hope to see them in one of my university classes one day!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
