Hello! I am a senior music education major with experience tutoring music and music theory. I have had opportunities teaching small ensembles and one-on-one woodwind lessons at a high school near my university. I programmed level-appropriate repertoire for the clarinet ensemble and facilitated weekly rehearsals, focusing on striving for ensemble balance, blend, and musicianship. This experience was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however the experience I gained from working with my students greatly impacted my approach to teaching in person and has influenced how I can help students in a virtual environment. During my time as an undergraduate music education major, I have attained over 40 hours of practicum and observation experience in elementary, middle, and high school music classes. Most recently, I have gained tutoring experience where I have been able to help numerous students in the area of music theory. Music theory is a challenging yet vital aspect of a comprehensive music education, so helping students through an online format has been an excellent way for me to reach students who need extra assistance. At Georgia College & State University, I have completed my keyboard proficiency exam, making me certified to teach basic level piano, and I scored at the professional level on both GACE music exams. After my last semester of student teaching, I will be certified to teach K-12 music in the state of Georgia.

I love finding solutions to problems in music, especially with the interdisciplinary nature of various areas of music. As a student, I learned and discovered numerous methods for solving musical problems that helped for me to be successful, and I think my own musical struggles have helped me to be relate to students and find new ways of explaining concepts. I am from a small rural town in Georgia where musical opportunities are extremely sparse. Most of my introductory music knowledge came from my own research and teaching myself instruments such as the guitar and ukulele. I learned some basic

In all four levels of my music theory courses, I was required to complete final projects that involved composing music within specified guidelines. I also completed an arranging course, taking music written for piano and orchestrating it for voice, string, and wind ensembles.

Music History

As a requirement for my undergraduate degree, I took two levels of Music History and received As in both courses. Music History I covered the beginnings of early music to around 1650, and Music History II covered around 1650 to modern day. In these courses, I was challenged with analyzing music from various time periods and completing assignments such as unidentified scores and listenings. These required me to identify scores and excerpts based on prior knowledge as well as musical and historical context.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

I completed four levels of combined ear training and sight-singing as a requirement for my undergraduate degree, receiving As in all four levels. I am skilled using moveable-do, solfege, and scale degrees. I also have experience with rhythmic and melodic dication in both simple and compound meters.
General Music,

General Music

I have played the saxophone for 12 years and am a senior music education major. I also have experience playing the clarinet, piano, ukulele, guitar, and some mandolin. I have music performance and research experience and have a 3.92 GPA with my degree program.
Guitar,

Guitar

I taught myself how to play the guitar when I was around 12 years old. After developing a love for the saxophone, I wanted to learn any instrument I could gain access to, including the guitar. Because I live in a rural area, I learned how to play by finding information online, practicing basic chords. As I am about to complete my undergraduate degree, I have a much better understanding of the music theory behind my guitar playing, and this has helped me to better understand how I can help a complete beginner.

Saxophone,

Saxophone

I have been playing the saxophone for 12 years. I have played all four of the primary members of the saxophone family (soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone) during my undergraduate experience. I have been an active member in my college's ensembles including saxophone quartet, jazz band, and wind symphony. I have also given lecture recitals and performed in various parts of Georgia as a classical and jazz saxophonist.
Sight Singing,

Sight Singing

As a combined course, I took ear-training and sight-singing together. Sight-singing was a new and unfamiliar skill when I began my undergraduate degree, and it was certainly one of the most challenging courses as a non-vocalist. Because of the unfamiliarity, I developed my own tools and tricks in practice to improve my skills. I made all As in each of the four levels of combined ear-training and sight-singing, and I would love to help others find methods that work for them as well.

Review of Sarah

Our first lesson was on the circle of fifths. This was something that always confused me before this lesson. It was very helpful. I’m really looking forward to the next lesson. I think I will learn a lot with her.
