I am a High School teacher with seven years of teaching experience in English. Courses taught include World Literature, American Literature, British Literature, Creative Writing, Mythology, and Advanced Placement Language and Composition. I have lots of editing experience, as I have helped several friends as well as my husband with the final draft of papers in the pursuit of various degrees. I also edited a campus newsletter while completing my M.A. in International Affairs.
While my editing skills are strong, I can also assist students with improving their writing. My courses in AP Language and Composition focused heavily on student essays in order for students to gain college credit for the class, so I have spent many hours helping students to analyze both excellent and awful essays in order to apply the best practices to their own work. The technique of looking at what other writers have done well or poorly and emulating excellence is one of my favorite tools for helping students improve their writing skills. Another technique is to teach students how to craft an effective argument, which is particularly helpful for persuasive writing but can also be useful for analyzing others' work.
I look forward to tutoring and/or editing for students who are anxious to learn how to improve their skills in writing, rhetoric, or literary analysis. At this time, I am available most weekdays, and some weekends as well.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In the AP Language and Composition courses I have taught, rhetoric and debate are large parts of the curriculum. I have taught students how to analyze arguments and form their own argument, as well as to examine differing views of a rhetorical position. I have experience in moderating student debates in the classroom and in helping students to gain confidence in their public speaking abilities by considering audience, context, and purpose and crafting a solid argument and a considered defense to probable counter-arguments. I believe this experience would be helpful to students who wish to improve their public speaking ability.
