About John

With a passion for writing and literature, an eye for detail, and a kind yet resolute tutoring style, I am able to give students a fun and understanding learning environment while producing substantial results every time.

It's not enough to fix someone's grammar, reveal the symbolism behind a work of literature, or to correct errors in a piece of writing. A student can't just know the right answer; he or she must also understand the how and why of that right answer. I go beyond simply giving information, imparting to students tools and strategies needed to master the inner workings of the subjects we study together.

My experience comes from taking numerous college courses in English and Writing, writing articles and serving as copy editor at a local newspaper, and creating press releases for the City of Valdosta's Public Information Office.

Whether it's editing an essay, taking apart Shakespeare line by line, or gaining the skills needed to ace the SAT, I love using my talents to help others achieve a higher level of academic success.

I look forward to hearing from you and aiding you in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

My love for the construction of words coupled with my college and work experience has driven me to learn the ins and outs of English grammar, and I can help you navigate these sometimes troublesome waters as well.

Literature

Shakespeare got you confused? Wordsworth got you down? Dickens got you in a tangle? I can help ease all your pain, and the whole time it'll feel like a fun conversation.

Proofreading

One of my favorite things to do is working through a piece of writing line by line, uncovering and eradicating even the tiniest of errors. Yes, I am that nerd. After having done extensive proofreading work for school and work, I'm still just as in love with it as the day I fixed that first typo.

SAT Reading

My analytical skills and patient teaching when it comes to reading can change the SAT reading portion from deciphering a foreign language to casually perusing your favorite book.

SAT Writing

When your hands start to sweat just thinking about all the writing required for the SAT, just remember that I, with all my tools and tricks of the trade, can make this mountain of a task into a mole hill that you'll skip right over.

Patient tutor

Since English is not my first language, I need help on editing and proofreading my essay before I can send it in. John did a very great job. He showed detailedly where the problems are and how to fix them. He is very patient while communicating with me. I do recommend him to be your English tutor.
