About Melissa

Hello, my name is Melissa and I love what I do here through Wyzant! If you need some guidance with Spanish, ESL or Visual Arts let me help you!

This is a basic breakdown of how I approach the different students I work with:

·Children ages 1 -10:
I speak to them entirely in the target language. We learn the alphabet, numbers, how to read and converse. I have successfully taught one child to read in Spanish. When we started she was age 4, now 2 years later she is able to read and write at the same level she can in English. There is another child I started working with in September of 2015, she was already familiar with the alphabet and numbers but not able to converse. Now she can carry on basic conversations on a variety of topics; holidays, school, animals, friends (the topics that interest her most) in the different modes of time, present, past, future, conditional.

·Teens and college students:
I look for patterns in errors; grammar, pronunciation, spelling. I explain why the mistakes occur, I then reintroduce content and provide new opportunities to practice through natural conversation. I've helped several students both in school and college raise their grades a letter grade or two. Keep in mind it takes time to improve grades. The sooner you seek help and the more time we have to go over concepts, the better the chances are you'll see the grade you desire. Also, please, send homework, quizzes, tests and classwork before each session. It gives me a chance to not only review errors but to create a better lesson based on your learning style.

·Adult learners:
We work on specific topics each session with an emphasis on personal and everyday scenarios. I often use popular board games to practice and review in the target language. I have worked with an array of professionals including: military personnel, pilots, accountants, health care professionals, restaurant health inspectors, retail associates, hospitality and tourism employees, travel enthusiasts, company managers, teachers, psychologists, zoologists, political scientists, and also individuals desiring to learn Spanish for a significant other. I do my best to assess your level of knowledge, your learning styles and create lessons are stimulating and useful.

Hola me llamo Melissa. Soy mitad colombiana, mitad americana. Si necesita ayuda con inglés, mandeme un mensaje. Me encanta aprender idiomas y ensenarlos.

As for art, I've been drawing portraits since I was 13 and absolutely love it. If you are interested in learning basic drawing skills with pastel, graphite or charcoal, I can help you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I've been drawing realistically for more than 10 years. Graphite (pencil), pen and pastel are my main areas of strength. My minor was art in undergrad at V.S.U. I'm now studying art at SCAD.

ESL/ESOL

Throughout my college experience I took education classes, three of which were focused on ESL instruction. I have an endorsement to teach ESL (a step below certification). As part of the program we worked within the community, in public schools (elementary-high school) and in adult learning centers where we tutored students one-on-one.

Spanish

My mother is Colombian, so I grew up listening and understanding it. However, it was not until my teen years that I began to learn Spanish formally. Having said that, I can easily identify common errors and the reasons for why you may be making them.

In 2010 I earned a B.A. in Spanish. While I was in college I studied Russian, German, French and Arabic simultaneously for several semesters. I don't consider myself qualified to teach the other four, but the tactics for finding patterns is a lot easier because I did study more than just one language.

I definitely do not have all the answers but I am confident that I can make the language learning process a little less stressful for you!
