While I was in school in Atlanta, I had a volunteer opportunity to teach adult literacy. That was my first taste of tutoring and I loved it! After I graduated from college, I became an English teacher for middle and high school grades (I am currently still enjoying this career). On the side I teach at a well-known after school tutoring center in Valdosta. My philosophy is that education is not just memorization, but an institution which must employ real-life application as well; thus my hands-on approach to teaching. At my school, I have begun teaching a horticulture class for the mere purpose of offering my students the opportunity to witness physical science in nature. I insist that my students have fun while learning, but namely I insist that my students learn analyzing skills that will help them decipher any educational challenge. I have complete confidence that I can help any student overcome most obstacles in my subject areas.
My experience is with ages 10-60, having worked with phonics, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, writing, reading, test prep, and literature of various sorts. My studies at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA offered me an extensive education in literature from ancient literature to modern literature, and everything in between (including exclusive studies in Shakespeare, Medieval literature, Greek literature, African American literature, religious literature, etc.) I have become proficient in writing, and have applied my studies in my classrooms that my students might have a broader view of the world. Some of my teaching techniques involve sight words, phonics, morphological enhancement (for all ages), anaylyzing content for better judgment, games, diverse class discussions, oral/share reading, and sometimes, just to switch things up a bit, I will have a student teach me their version of a concept in order to grasp where there is a learning curve, if at all. I currently hold a Georgia teaching certification.
