Georgia State University (Sociology)
Mercer University Atlanta, GA (Master's)
I entered the field of education because I love to see children succeed and pursue their dreams. Once in education, I knew that I was meant to stay because of the profound experience of seeing the spark in my student’s eyes when they learn something new or figure out something with which they have struggled. I am currently certified in middle grades education; however, I have experience working with multiple levels of education. I have worked with general education, students in special education, elementary, middle, and high school students. I am now in an endorsement program to teach gifted education. My undergraduate studies as well as my degree is in Sociology give me the knowledge to tutor in areas of history, government, and the Social Sciences.
I have 11 years of certified experience; but before becoming certified, I volunteered and tutored students in reading, grammar and writing, and passing the Georgia High School Graduation Test. My students have shown constant growth and achievement on State, benchmark, and system-wide assessments. Ninety-one percent (91%) of my students met and exceeded standards on the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) in 2013-14. I have high expectations and expect all my students to not only learn but also to exceed and excel. My students love to learn because, I try to produce lessons that are fun, relevant to things they are interested, and engaging. I enjoy input from my students as to what they want to learn, how they learn, and things that worked for them in my lessons as well as things that could be improved to help them learn and understand better.
I love to hear student's express their thoughts in writing. I have always loved words, vocabulary, word meanings and history of words as well as free expression of thoughts and feelings through words, i.e. poetry. My love for words and writing has made my teaching of Language Arts fun and exciting. I also feel that Reading is the most important subject there is because every facet of your life is touched in some way by reading. Because reading is so important to a successful life, I take the instruction of reading seriously and try to teach it with rigor so that students are prepared for the real world.
I have received training in Common Core, differentiated instruction, and strategies to assist students with mastering the Common Core Curriculum. I have implemented lessons in which Common Core Standards are embedded; however, I also keep creativity and critical thinking at the forefront of all my lessons.
I think a solid foundation is paramount for student success. I am certified to teach 4th and 5th grade students. I have taught my students study skills that will help them succeed in later grades, reading skills, spelling, handwriting, and test taking skills. More importantly, I teach my students how to think and show them the importance of being aware of how they learn, so that they can be advocates of their own education in later grades.
I have worked with students with special needs and have made modifications to my lessons and provided accommodations to help them master content. What I do not modify though is my expectations of these students. Special needs students learn differently but are capable of learning. My expectation is that they try and that they succeed to the best of their own personal abilities, and if that is done, they will be successful.
I have experience with the Microsoft suite of products and can help students to use these with their assignments.
I think that students should be well-rounded individuals. Being knowledgeable about History, Government, Politics, and Social Sciences will help them to not only be smart academically, but intelligent conversationalists. I teach history so that it is interesting and I try to tie history with the present to make it relevant for students.
I would love to tutor you/your child to help them catch up, continue to do well, excel in their learning past current grade-level standards , and or research new things to extend their learning. Please email me if you are interested in your child moving beyond good to being great! I entered the field of education because I love to see children succeed and pursue their dreams. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
