Potential parents and students: I have been tutoring for more than 20 years. I started when I was in college tutoring part time but for the last 7 years I have been tutoring full time. I also taught math for grades 7 through 12 for a few years. During that time, I discovered that there is no greater personal reward than to get students interested in learning. I loved getting my students interested in whatever I was teaching and motivating those who did not like mathematics to develop at least some appreciation for the subject. There is no greater feeling to have a student who has been struggling with a particular topic in math, finally understand what you have been trying to teach them. Math has always been my passion but I always wondered if I could take that love of math and project it upon students and have them enjoy it or at the very least be half as interested as I am in the subject and even if they still hate it, I wanted them to care enough to work at it to achieve good grades. I achieved that goal for the majority of my students and that is something of which I am extremely proud.
After my teaching years, I started tutoring full time and the reason that I went from teaching to tutoring is the one on one attention that I can give my students which is impossible to get in a classroom of 30 students. A lot of students are struggling in math and that is mainly because of concepts that they may not have grasped in earlier years. Math is building blocks and if blocks are missing at the bottom, the structure collapses. One on one tutoring enables me to fill in those gaps and hence build a strong structure and that helps students succeed. In addition, students learn in different ways - some are more visual, some are more practical etc - and in a normal classroom setting a teacher does not have the time to teach the same concept in different ways and this is where one on one tutoring becomes invaluable. I work with my students and determine their learning style and then structure our tutoring sessions based on that.
I love to teach math, I love to motivate and encourage students and I also love the challenge of working with weaker students. I am highly motivated, extroverted and energetic and I am sure that I can be an excellent tutor for your student. Potential parents and students: I have been tutoring for more than 20 years. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
