In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
American history allows students of all ages to understand the importance of the past. Knowing the history of our America encourages all individuals to be better citizens. History teaches all of us that our country has not been perfect, but we learn from the mistakes of the past. Teaching about our mistakes and our victories is achieved in various ways. My job as a tutor is to make American history become alive by individual means. One example is role play to help students see and retain important events of history. My job as a tutor is to bring American history to life.
My certification in the areas of elementary education, reading, language arts has allowed me to be a proficient and knowledgeable educator to all individual students. I aspired to promote grammar skills necessary for future grade levels and life success. Grammar is an indicator of educational goals achieved.
My own passion for literature creates a fire in those I teach. My ability to encourage students to dig deeply into the full meaning of works of literature is an eye-opening experience. A professor at Valdosta State University observed my tutoring of a student during my capstone experience without my knowledge. She related to other professors that I had the magic touch in regards to enlightening and encouraging my students to a proficient and easily observable interest in literature.
I have a passion for writing and teaching writing. My experience has included work with Dr. Warren Combs, A University of Georgia scholar and author of his own detailed writing system.
At the beginning of the school year, students were told to write a page on a topic of their own choice. I read and kept each writing for knowledge of individual skills and as a comparison of their end of the year improvement.
Writing daily is necessary to develop skills to become a proficient writer. I use numerous methods to promote the skills of even the weakest writer. I especially feel that students should read their own work to a partner and allow their partner to ask questions to clarify parts of the writing not understood. This method helps students to learn from each other. As a former teacher of fifth-grade, writing scores were proof of writing efficiently.
My interest and enthusiasm for reading began when I was a young girl. I know the importance of reading daily, and the benefits acquired by all individuals. Reading reflects and reinforces every aspect of an individual's life experiences. At Valdosta State University, my interest grew as I achieved a reading endorsement. When my eyes were open to new avenues to promote reading, I began the venture to earn my masters in reading education for ages K through adult. After my masters, I tested and passed certification as a reading specialist.
My career as an educator was highly influenced by my love for writing. Throughout my years of teaching, writing was used daily in every subject. Many individuals are reluctant writers. They do not have confidence in their ability to write the words that remain hidden inside. My strategy for these individuals is to allow them to talk to me instead of writing their story. After our talk, I tell students that they have lots of information to share with others or write for themselves. Gradually, they become confident in their ability to convey information by writing their own words. So many strategies exist for enabling all individuals to become writers. Individualizing those strategies would be my job as a tutor.
