About Mary

My BA is in Interdisciplinary Studies and my MA is in Curriculum and Instruction as a Reading Specialist from the University of Texas. I have spent many years tutoring students in reading and math. I have worked as a Reading Specialist. In Texas I worked as a Title 1 Reading Specialist teaching Dyslexic students using Orton-Gillingham. I moved to Florida and taught in a private boarding school teaching reading to students with learning problems. I have been trained in Linda-Mood Bell programs (LIPS and Verbalizing and Visualizing) and also Spell Read another program for students with reading difficulties. I am certified in Texas and Florida in Elementary Education and K-12 Reading. I am also certified in ESE.

I am retired now but have found that I miss the student/teacher interaction and would absolutely love to teach again on a part-time basis. There is nothing more satisfying than to be able to teach one-on-one and watch when your student begins to see his or her potential and realize, "I can do this!"

I would be thrilled to be able to help you or your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I have an MA as a Reading Specialist from the University of Texas. I have taught reading to students from Kindergarten through High School. I have been a Reading Specialist for students with reading disabilities, especially with problems in vocabulary, comprehension and decoding.

ADD/ADHD

I have a Florida certification in ESE, and I have taught for 8 years in a school that specialized in students with learning differences. During this time I have had many inservices that taught us how to teach using differentiated strategies for students who have ADD/ADHD.

Algebra 1

Although my degree is in Reading, I have always loved Algebra. I am especially excited to teach Algebra because, as opposed to reading, there is always a right answer. I feel that Algebra problems are a puzzle that need to be solved, and I'd like my students to feel the same way. I have taught 5th grade math for 5 years and have tutored students in Algebra.

ASVAB

I have experience tutoring students for GED, SAT, and ACT. The ASVAB test is not too different from these. I am capable of not only tutoring for ASVAB subjects, but also in teaching test taking strategies which are so important in order to pass any major test.

Dyslexia

I have a Master's degree as a Reading Specialist from the University of Texas. I have been trained in different Orton-Gillingham programs relating to Dyslexia such as Multi-Sensory Teaching Approach, where I was the Dyslexia teacher for Title 1.

I have trained in a Lindamood Bell program called LiPPS which is another program for students with Dyslexia. I taught this program for 4 years. I was also trained in Spell Pat Read, a reading program for students who have failed the FCAT in 3rd grade and is also an Orton-Gillingham program.

Students with Dyslexia may be very intelligent and have high IQ's, but have problems with reading and need very structured learning strategies to help them.

Elementary (K-6th)

My certification is in Elementary Education, Reading K-6, and ESE. I have a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, my BA is in Elementary education.

I have taught all grade levels. I specialize in Reading which is the most important for all subjects. I have taught 5th grade for 5 years, and have taught K-5 in summer school and last year I taught 6th grade reading.

English

I have a Master's degree as a Reading Specialist. I feel that Reading and English have quite a bit in common. I have also taught English to students whose English is a second language for them.

ESL/ESOL

I am a retired teacher with a Master's Degree in Reading. Throughout my career I have taught and taken many classes in ESOL. Last year I taught reading to students from Puerto Rico, so I understand the strategies needed to teach these students and the problems they encounter when trying to learn English.

GED

I have taught high school reading and tutored high school math. I have tutored for ACT and 10th grade FCAT as well as GED. I can help with not only GED subjects but also test taking strategies. The students I have tutored for the GED have all passed the first time taking the test.

Phonics

I have a Masters degree as a Reading Specialist. I have also had training in many programs which are multi-sensory approaches to teaching phonics. I have been trained in Orton-Gillingham, Linda Mood Bell, and Spell Read Pat. I have taught these on a one-to-one basis and in small groups.

Students who have trouble with reading, writing, and spelling learn in different ways. Students who have these problems need to learn the sound/symbol relationship in a very structured way. They need repetition but also need to learn using all their senses.

Reading

I have a Master's Degree in Reading and have been trained in many different programs for students with reading problems. I have been trained in Orton-Gillingham, Lindamood Bell and Spell Pat Read.
I worked for 8 years at The Vanguard School of Lake Wales as a Reading Specialist and most recently I have worked for the Polk County School Board as a Reading Teacher.

Special Needs

I have a Masters Degree as a Reading Specialist from the University of Texas. I am also certified in ESE. I have taught students with special needs at the Vanguard School in Lake Wales which is a school for students with learning differences. I have also been trained in several different reading programs such Orton Gillingham programs- Wilson, MTA, Spell Read and Lindamood Bell.
I understand that students with special needs, need to have structure, need multi-sensory teaching, they learn in different ways and the teacher must have patience.

Spelling

Spelling and reading go hand in hand. In order to be a good speller, you must be able to know the sounds that are associated with each letter. I have been a Reading teacher for the past 20 years and will be able to teach your child many strategies to be able to become a good speller

TEAS

The TEAS test is a test of basic knowledge. My BA is in Interdisciplinary studies where I took chemistry, college algebra, physiology and anatomy. I have an MA as a Reading Specialist.
My experience is in teaching High School Reading, Language Arts and test preparation for all areas of SAT and ACT. I have tutored students in Algebra and Science.

Writing

I have taught reading, writing and math for grades K-12. I taught 5th grade for 5 years. I have also taught middle and high school students. I especially enjoy teaching students who have had learning difficulties, it is such a joy to see them progress and become confident in their educational abilities.
