I have coached both on a recreational level and high school level for 21 years now. I have coached both boys & girls, ages 5-18. My coaching experience started in Far Rockaway, New York, at the Sorrentino Recreation Center. After that, I have experience with Friends Academy High School as the Girls Assistant Varsity Coach, The Lady Raptors in Queens, NY, Forest Hills Basketball League, and most recently, at the Mountain View Recreation Program in Lawrenceville, GA. I have coached championship teams and have had the ability to turn programs around, building on players' confidence and skill level. Through my experiences, the ability to adjust my coaching style from gender, to age, to competition has progressed tremendously through the years.
Before starting my coaching career in 1994, I played briefly for 3 years in the Catholic Youth Organization in Far Rockaway, NY, and for other tournaments such as the Junior Knicks Tournament. Picking up the position of point guard and shooting guard, I was able to develop the key points in ball handling, shooting, and running a structured but efficient offense. I was called upon multiple times in key situations during those days. My short, but influential, playing career played a vital role in what I know today, and am still able to pass those life-long lessons to the young players coming up today. Once I decided to focus on coaching in 1994, I stepped away from my playing career. I have extensively mentored and coached athletes who have gone on to play at the highest levels.
With the season & tryouts fast approaching, let me help you make that squad.
Once a client were to sign up with me to train, that client can expect to work hard and be very disciplined in our sessions. My sessions are diagrammed with a detailed schedule of drills and exercises. For example, in a 2-hour session (just like running a basketball practice for a full team), my sessions would start out with warm-ups and conditioning drills (such as laps, suicides, etc.). We would then move on to drills such as various and multiple ball handling drills to sharpen ball handling, defensive drills to sharpen the skills needed to become a solid defensive player, and shooting drills to sharpen the skills needed to be an efficient shooter and decision maker. Once we have gone through our first couple of sessions, I would be able to determine the areas that are most needed to be focused on and concentrate on those areas to hone in on the skills that are weakest. Typically, at the end of a session, I would implement a "fun drill" as a reward for the athlete's hard work. But, the "fun drill" would also be an effective tool used to continue to work on the areas that would improve the athlete's performance. My sessions also include a mentor session, which entails a one-on-one to be able to properly and effective communicate to the athlete what they can expect in their playing career and how they should focus their attention on accomplishing their goals in their careers, as well as other areas they may need. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
