About Edward

Hi; I'm Joe and I'm going help you or your child to feel better prepared, more confident, and less stressed about English/Writing/Reading in the SAT, ACT, GRE, or any other test or writing task. I am just starting out with WyzAnt, but I have been tutoring since 2004; while I enjoy all forms of teaching, the one-on-one setting is ideal. I genuinely enjoy the chance to help students find out how they can best represent themselves and their ideas in writing. I serve NE OTP communities, including Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Duluth, and Lawrenceville; I'm willing to travel to you, and we can meet in whatever setting is most convenient, including public areas such as libraries and coffee shops or at your residence.

I am a writing educator with 15 years of experience; I've taught in public schools, community colleges, universities, for tutoring companies, and privately. Every place tackles language arts test-taking in its own way and that makes me familiar with a VERY diverse range of strategies. The SAT is changing and other tests will soon follow suit, but I can provide an adaptive, focused curriculum, tailored for getting you the score you're looking for. I offer a great combination of extensive content knowledge and over a decade of experience. If you think that I might be the right fit for you or your student, please contact me; I'd love to hear from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

WyzAnt ACT English certified

ACT Reading

I'm WyzAnt certified to tutor in ACT and SAT English/Reading/Writing, with over 10 years of tutoring experience.

English

Extensive experience teaching college-level lit, writing, and business communications, as well as other language arts and public speaking courses.

ESL/ESOL

I have over ten years of teaching and tutoring experience, much of it concerning adult and non-traditional learners. I can help with language acquisition for non-native speakers, as well as the development of professional communications.

Grammar

Grammar is confusing and frustrating. I teach it in a practical, applied way that touches on such common issues as wordiness, repetition, and awkward phrasing. A pretty turn-of-phrase is nice, but my objectives are more practical: I work with students to make their writing 'invisible', so that what they're saying isn't obscured by how they're saying it.

GRE

As a graduate student, I had to take the GRE myself. As with any test, there are practical strategies that can help the test-taker, but actually being in the position of taking such a test is unique; besides content and strategy knowledge, I can relate to what this specific community of test-takers is going through.

Literature

So much of what lit students are graded on comes down to how well they can consider the content and show that consideration in discussion and writing. Have those discussions with me so that you're better prepared for them when they count for credit.

Proofreading

Revision and proofing skills are never going to go out of style: no piece of academic or professional writing should go out after only a single read, so I help students develop the skills to find and correct any problems that will hinder them in expressing themselves clearly.

Public Speaking

I have taught public speaking in high school and community college settings. I have also used those skills myself as an educator for over 10 years. Further, I understand the need for online instruction even for such a physically-intensive subject and am eager to make such accommodations.

Reading

Good reading skills are, really, good critical thinking and note-taking skills. I'll help you out with determining the best approaches to the material, as well as how to efficiently analyze a piece for such elements as overall message, tone, style, and other factors.

SAT Reading

I've taught reading and writing skills at a number of levels, from middle school through college; I've tutored all ages, elementary school children through adult professionals, and I pride myself on being able to adapt my content and delivery to the needs of my client.

SAT Writing

I'm WyzAnt certified to tutor in ACT and SAT English/Reading/Writing, with over 10 years of tutoring experience.

Study Skills

I am an experienced teacher and tutor who has implemented some very effective note-taking lessons across my courses. I very much believe in the value of note-taking and other study skills, and I would bring not only a practical understanding of the process to my lessons, but an energetic attitude about the process. I am well versed in a number of methods and my study-skills pedagogy is tech-intensive.

Ready to take on a challenge. — Great first meeting. Joe is very engaged and interested. He did not make assumptions, instead had a long conversation with my 15yo son to understand the challenges he is facing and the needs he has to reach certain goals. He has fresh ideas for my son to try new things in manageable steps. We are looking forward to the next meeting. ...
