About Maria Helena

Salut! Olá!

I'm an European Portuguese native who has recently moved to the US. I speak Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French fluently. I can also speak a little Italian. Languages are my passion - and so is teaching and reading. I want you to also experience this feeling!

My education includes a Master's degree in English - ESOL - and French Language and Literature from University of Porto, Porto, Portugal. I also have a Minor in Portuguese Linguistics and Literary Studies and a Proficiency Certificate in English from Cambridge University.

I've been a language teacher for more than twenty years. I taught English and French at middle and high school level in Portugal, as well as in Adult Education Programs, for 17 years, and I also taught Conversational Portuguese at Leeds University, UK, during my Erasmus year abroad. I taught English to 4-6 year-olds in a private language school for two years. Apart from doing occasional translation jobs in the different languages, I am currently a Portuguese and Spanish language instructor in a company and I also teach Portuguese, Spanish, ESOL, and French as a private tutor.

I am used to teaching different age levels in different contexts. I have worked with children, teenagers and adults and I always adjust my teaching methods to the student's age, needs and purpose. I am a very patient, motivated and enthusiastic teacher. I never give up on a student and I am sure I can help him/her attain his/her full potential.

I believe anyone can learn a new language but consistent repetition and refreshing before, during and after class is needed.I expect the student to be responsible, patient and persistent in his learning process and I am willing to help him/her on the way.

So let us make this journey together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

Non-native speakers of English will gradually understand and be able to make themselves understood in a variety of social, business or academic situations - whether in aural or written contexts.
Instruction and practice is given in the different communication skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Reading: comprehension of short, medium-length and long selections, adapted or authentic, depending on students’ reading competency; practice of reading skills including previewing, finding the main idea, simple outlining, scanning, detecting sequence, using context clues, skimming, inferencing, and distinguishing fact and opinion.
Writing: creation of clear, comprehensible writing, working with sentences at the first level and moving on to work with paragraphs and essays at more advanced levels; learning and using grammar, vocabulary and punctuation conventions.
Speaking: focus on conversational English; developing a fluent and appropriate use of common words and functional expressions in daily life contexts.
Listening: understanding verbal instructions and questions, common vocabulary and daily functions in an aural context; understanding main ideas and details in monologues and dialogues.
Vocabulary: practice in a wide variety of communicative activities; work on word level, sentence level and context level; expansion of receptive and productive vocabulary; focus on increasing students’ active vocabulary as to make them learn not only the meaning of the words but also their use in original expressions.

French

Learning a new language can be very challenging but very rewarding too. In this global world, being able to communicate in other than one's native language is very important. In my tutoring sessions students will be able to practice their different communication skills so that they can make themselves understood in a variety of social, business or academic situations - whether in aural or written contexts.
