About Monica

Helping students achieve is what I do! My goal is to empower students to utilize a combination of traditional and non-traditional methods to learn. My experience as a classroom teacher in grades Pre-K through 5th allows me establish and nurture the building blocks of concepts needed to be successful and confident. Concepts will be practiced with hands on and traditional activities, computer games will be used to reinforce skills, and assessments will be given during each session to determine the next steps in lessons to come. Students will also be given activities to complete prior to the next lesson to help reinforce skills.

Individualized attention, as well as group tutoring has yielded positive outcomes for the students that I have worked with. In an one on one session, the student will have modeled instruction, opportunity to practice the skill with assistance, and demonstration of learning with unassisted practice to assess abilities and the lesson will be closed in a review.

In a group session, students will have modeled instruction as well, time to practice with assistance, and demonstration of learning with me, as others work on reinforcing the skill at hand until it is their turn. Each student will be assessed in their ability level and the lesson will be closed with a review.

Phonics, reading, grammar, math and science are the subjects that I tutor. I have previously worked with elementary students to help them with classroom performance and on standardized state test. I have experience in conducting a CRCT test prep sessions in which students were given a pre-assessment, tutored in the subjects of reading and math. A post assessment was given to gauge student learning and give parents/teachers updates of additional areas of need as well as strengths.

Working with students is pleasure as their light bulbs come on and their candles are lit!

Looking forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have worked with numerous students that had ADD and ADHD in the classroom setting. I have observed success in the classroom by creating a structured environment that exhibits schedules and consistent routines. These students require more modeling, visual aids, more practice of skills taught, and the need to have concepts re-taught. In addition, study guides and graphic organizers are extremely helpful due to how they process and store information. It provides support to assist with recollection when needed.

Cooking

I have conducted a series of cooking classes to adults and children. Cooking methods and alternate options for healthy eating has been demonstrated in these sessions. Students learned heart health options, ways to cook with less sodium, identifying hidden sources of sodium, baking of cookies, cakes, and savory dishes.

Homeschool

I have 2 years of teaching experience as a home school parent. Lessons in language arts, science, social studies, and math were planned using multiple resources, which includes a combination on technology, hands on, book activities, and student-led activities to enrich learning. As a result, my son was more motivated, had more confidence, and he acquired more information through application than he did in the public school arena. Home school methods really was a plus for my son and it broadened his world as a life long learner that is about to graduate.

Study Skills

Study skills is included in learning in the classroom setting. I have helped students get organized, to study information learned by teaching note taking skills, how to study by identifying important information, and ways to activate their memories. I demonstrate how to highlight, illustrate, underline, and spend time daily to acquire information in part to avoid overload.
