About Ben

Wyzant approved to teach Business, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Political Science/Government, Series 7 & 63 Brokerage Licenses, Excel, GMAT, & American Football.

My specialty is Accounting 1 & 2. If you struggle with Debits & Credits, I have the perfect 11-word visual that will solve your problem. When I first took Accounting, I initially had trouble, withdrew, took it the following summer, and made "A"s thereafter. Since Accounting did not naturally come to me, I had to learn some tricks that would make it easier for me. I'm really good at relating the Accounting concepts to things you already understand, allowing you to comprehend what would otherwise just fly by.

I passed the FINRA Series 7 (broker), 24 (supervisory), and 63 (ethics and regulation) licenses while working 5 years in Investment Banking.

I am experienced in and enjoy teaching. I have taught Accounting I and II and Excel (90% proficiency rating) at two community colleges; taught and managed corporate interns at 2 companies where I personally developed the curriculum; and I've also taught Sunday School for over 8 years. I often teach by analogy -- it's a thrill to see the "lights click on" with my students.

My core attributes are analysis, organization, and business communication.

I have a B.S. in Finance from the University of Alabama (cum laude) and an MBA from the University of North Carolina. Additionally, I have successfully completed a number of training courses. My career experience is of value to students seeking senior management positions. I have queried executive management of companies seeking financing and then reported the analyses with recommendation to my senior management, supporting corporate decision-making at the highest levels of the US economy (loans up to $100 million and investments over $500 million). I have prepared financial performance and variance reviews and made presentations to investors, directors, senior management, lenders, beneficiaries, customers, the financial public, and to the general public, and I have been published in the financial press. I have performed hundreds of business projections/forecasts for entities in all economic sectors, giving me a quick grasp of virtually all business models.

At my core I'm an optimizer, eager to learn about businesses, science, technology, economics, and politics. I constantly attempt to adjust my worldview to reality. Now, overlay that with 16 years spent working in the inner-most cog of the US economy -- the allocation of capital to businesses (corporate lending and investment banking). I was exposed to virtually all industries with companies of all sizes (family businesses, mature middle market, and large caps). I wove a narrative of what had occurred -- identifying what was done right and wrong and who were telling the truth and who were spinning. I learned best practices and the shortcuts. Finally, combine that with a person who loves to teach, explain, and relate -- with that I think you've got a great mentor. And if we connect on LinkedIn, you'll benefit from my 1400 contacts there.

No one knows it all and we all need help. If you're looking for an edge in any of the above areas of my expertise, invest in your future and let me help you get there faster and stronger.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Accounting

ACCOUNTING QUALIFICATIONS
I have performed or managed the accounting process at 5 businesses. I have worked an enterprise accounting software service desk. I've taught Accounting I & II at 2 different junior colleges. I have a 90% proficiency rating in Excel which I have also taught at the college level.

Business

My life mission has been analyzing the past in order to change the future. My core attributes are analysis, organization, and business communication.

I have started and/or managed 6 companies, including marketing research, investment banking, software development, a pension fund, personal care, and a business consulting firm. I have an inquisitive nature, with deep knowledge and interests in business, marketing, demographics, technology and science, international commerce, outsourcing, and macro- and micro-economics.

I have a consultative approach in problem resolution with peers and subordinates. I have always queried senior management of the subject companies being analyzed and then reported the analyses with recommendation to my senior management. Furthermore, I wrote analyses for release to the financial public – all of which required management’s confidence in my objectivity and professionalism.

I have supported senior management decision making my entire career, making recommendations on loans up to $100 million and on investments over $500 million. I have prepared financial performance and variance reviews and made presentations to investors, directors, senior mgmt, lenders, beneficiaries, customers, the financial public, and to the general public, and I have been published in the financial press. I have performed hundreds of business projections for entities in all economic sectors for lending, equity raises, or internal use. These forecasts were based on modeling that included cyclical and seasonal variables, unit and margin trends and correlations, and sophisticated annualizations. I have M&A and off- and on-site due diligence experience.

I have developed both operating and capital budgets and long-term forecasts for 5 business entities. As the Assistant Treasurer at the pension fund, I developed 3 fiscal year budgets which were within ± 3% of actuals throughout the year. At the pension fund and a previous company I reported – both orally and written – our financial performance on a monthly basis to the Board and the membership.

I have performed or managed the accounting process at 5 businesses. I have a 90% proficiency rating in Excel which I have also taught at the college level, along with Accounting. I have worked an enterprise accounting software service desk. I have never encountered a software system I could not master and I have architected software applications.

During my career, I have participated in critical decision-making at high levels in corporate America, as well as diligently performing mundane administrative tasks. I am an optimizer, constantly striving to accomplish a given task more efficiently. I have a strong work ethic, investing whatever time is required to get the job done.

I am an experienced and good teacher (teaching interns, analysts, college Accounting and Excel students, and Sunday School students), most commonly teaching via analogy.

Economics

I have been a student of political science/economics/history -- three heavily intertwined sciences. I have 41 semester hours of college study in these fields. Econ courses include Econ I & II, Macro, Micro, Int'l, Economic Analysis II, and Economic Forecasting & Analysis. Furthermore, I’ve lived and studied Nixon's "Wage & Price Freeze", Reagan & Volker’s killing inflation and restoring economic growth, and through the boom & bust of the dot coms and real estate (and nearly the Great Depression II).

Finance

I have supported senior management decision making my entire career, making recommendations on loans up to $100 million and on investments over $500 million. I have prepared financial performance & variance reviews and made presentations to investors, directors, senior mgmt, lenders, beneficiaries, customers, the financial public, and to the general public, and I have been published in the financial press. I look forward to discussing how my knowledge and skill set can address your needs.

Football

I have been a continuous fan of American football since 1971. I played organized football for 9 years. I've coached football for 2 seasons. I attended the University of Alabama during the Bear Bryant days and I am a devotee of Nick Saban & Bill Belichick.

I have knowledge in and can teach blocking, running, tackling, catching, snapping (hand, shotgun, field goal, punt), and kicking techniques, as well as audibles, rules, field & equipment, player safety, offensive/defensive/special team formations, time management, strategy, tactics, and the history of the game. My weakest areas are pass routes & coverage schemes which I could remedy overnight if necessary.

I am passionate about American football.

Government & Politics

I have been a student of political science/economics/history -- three heavily intertwined sciences -- since 1971, beginning with Nixon's "Wage & Price Freeze". In addition, I have 41 semester hours of college study in these fields.

I understand the many different forms of international governmental organization, and have a detailed understanding of American government functions, foundations, constitutions, and legal systems.

I organized both party & electoral campaigns for over 10 years with outstanding success.

I founded and managed a political polling company that conducted over 170,000 10-minute surveys and then used that information to influence over 750,000 votes via a separate PAC which utilized the most cutting edge direct mail and outbound phone technology at the time.

Since my political activity I have worked polling stations during several elections, resulting in a deeper technical/regulatory understanding of the electoral process.

I am well-versed in 20th and 21st century US and world politics and I am knowledgeable of prior time periods. I understand the cultural, demographic, and socio-economic currents that shape the unfolding of the political course. And I can teach political science objectively, without interjecting my own well-developed world view into the subject.

Microsoft Excel

I've received a 90-percentile rating on Excel in the past. But most of all I recently worked at the Home Depot corporate office for 4 months (the smartest people I've ever worked with!). I worked in the Assortment Planning Dept as a Data Analyst, manipulating & analyzing 1MM+ data sets, almost always in Excel. Calculated & compared various costs, calculated unique assortments. Analyzed for penetration, urbanicity, size, duration, form, types, organic, usage, etc. I have routinely used Pivot Tables and VLookups.

Series 63

I passed the Series 63 (ethics & regulations) on my first exam with a grade of 84/100 (50 question exam). I answered many of the questions with the general principals of best practices & business ethics. Those 2 principles can help you maintain composure during the test.

Previously I had passed the Series 7. Afterward, I also passed the Series 24 (supervisory), all 3 passed on their first attempt. The Series 7 & 24 exams were materially harder than the Series 63.

I took these exams while working in an investment banking department (5 years' total experience), applying the concepts to my work.

I often teach by analogy -- it's a thrill to see the "lights click on" with my students.

There are numerous ways I can teach core business ethics, which is the foundation for this test. The regulations component is primarily memorization.

I passed the Series 7 on my first exam with a grade of 86/100. I answered many of the questions with the general principals of best practices & business ethics. Those 2 principles can help you maintain composure during the test.

Great tutor to help with online accounting course — Ben was able to really help me better grasp the basic accounting principles I was struggling with through my online accounting course. With being in an online course, it was difficult for me to have that sense of interactive learning. Ben was able to thoroughly answer any questions I had and clarify the topics covered in my course.
