About Nathan

It is my privilege to provide personalized intermediate and advanced-level American English fluency lessons to motivated ESL adults, face-to-face and online using Skype. My clients include international graduate school scholars, working professionals, and their spouses desiring professional English communications development. To customize meaningful ESL lessons, I reference my Kennesaw State University TESOL certification training, progressive tutoring experience, and scholarly teaching resources. I am currently tutoring or mentoring international ESL clients from Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Japan, India, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Spain, Switzerland, and Russia. I tutor my ESL clients respectfully and mentor them for life.

I am available to tutor ESL clients, daily, from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., Eastern Standard Time. Unlike the typical ESL classroom lectures offered by others, my lessons are interactive one-to-one English communication enhancement experiences. With my positive reinforcement, clients learn to clearly enunciate polite American accent English phrases that include conversational phrasal verbs and the idiomatic business expressions used by well-educated North Americans. Throughout my lessons, mispronunciations are politely corrected and subsequently revisited until clients have internalized my respectful reminders.

Each ESL lesson plan begins with polite American accent English conversation to exercise and strengthen each client's vocabulary, pronunciation, and deliberate use of collocation words. Next, I ask each client to read aloud from their list of past mispronunciations to confirm the efficacy of my corrections. Finally, each client's lesson plan focuses on their specific English communication priorities. American English conversation, vowel sound differentiation, reading comprehension, academic writing, presentation delivery, and business English expressions are among the most popular options offered. Appropriate textbook exercises, lesson handouts, and online listening resources are demonstrated, during class, to enhance between-lesson learning opportunities.

Specialties: I am a native-speaker of standard non-regional American accent English and a passionate advocate of lifelong learning. My ESL specialties include the teaching and articulation of the standard American-style English pronunciation and polite speech practices associated with well-educated North Americans. My intermediate and advanced-level American English lessons emphasize the multiple-word thought groups, best known as collocations, that North American English speakers are most comfortable hearing. I often collaborate with clients to script, proofread, and evaluate the American English oral and written presentations required of them. Astute international graduate school professors and business executives routinely use my presentation editing services while practicing their PowerPoint-supported presentations in advance.

My most popular lesson topics include, but are not limited to:
1. American English pronunciation
2. Business English expressions
3. Conversational small talk
4. Foreign accent reduction
5. Interview question preparation
6. Oral presentation evaluation
7. Phrasal verb comprehension
8. Native speaker's word collocation

Are you planning a business trip? Let's collaborate to list the English questions you are likely to be asked and practice your best American accent answers. Similarly, we can predict and practice effective telephone English dialogues until you are confident when making and taking phone calls. When we proofread, edit, and practice delivering your PowerPoint presentations, aloud, you can expect your public speaking butterflies to disappear.

Invitation: Many of the long-term ESL scholars that I assist report huge improvements in their American accent English abilities after meeting with me regularly for as little as three months. My clients often validate my respectful dedication to their English communication goals with the excellent reviews and high lesson ratings included here. I am very proud of their accomplishments and grateful for the trust they place in my teaching abilities. I invite you to contact me to discuss your American-style English learning objectives and to schedule future lessons.

Background: During the many years that I traveled, studied, and worked abroad in the following countries and islands: Austria, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, China, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Hawaii, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, Switzerland, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Virgin Islands, I became familiar with many of the world's diverse peoples and their unique cultures. I frequently accepted requests to teach American accent English to enthusiastic ESL scholars at every stop. In return, my new international friends often invited me to dine with their families and friends. Best of all, I continue to enjoy those lasting memories from around the world. (Updated: April 2016)

I am very proud to congratulate Rokhsareh on her recent acceptance by both of the American dental PhD graduate programs to which she applied. We collaborated to prepare her American accent English verbal presentation skills before she took the daunting TOEFL exam and again just before she interviewed at the two dental graduate schools she preferred. We worked together until she felt thoroughly prepared to confidently respond to any question put to her. I expect Rokhsareh to excel at whichever dental school she ultimately chooses.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

While studying and working in Thailand, Germany, and Japan, I tutored motivated English learners and closely observed their modern cultures. Since settling in Atlanta in 2010, I have tutored American English Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing to many international working professionals and college graduate school scholars, both face-to-face and online. Wishing to update my American English tutoring skills, I completed ESL teacher’s specialty classes at Kennesaw State University in 2012 and 2013, to earn my Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Classroom and Online Certification.

Grammar

I enjoy teaching English Grammar to all of my adult ESL clients. In particular, I emphasize the importance of learning to use phrasal verbs to ESL Grammar, Conversation, and Listening students. Likewise, I highlight the use of causal, comparative, and temporal connective vocabulary to ESL Grammar, Writing, and Proofreading clients.

In 2013, while enhancing my Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) University certification, I completed coursework entitled Teaching English Grammar. Along with a thorough college-level review of the ins and outs of the English language, this ESL teacher's course taught me how to instruct ESL adults in beginner, intermediate, and advanced-level English grammar. Additionally, I was introduced to a comprehensive set of ESL grammar learning texts, workbooks, and interactive PowerPoint materials.

IELTS

My speech models the standard non-regional American accent English pronunciation required to score well on the IELTS standardized test. I stress the importance of answering as many IELTS sample test questions as possible to practice using the proven standardized test-taking strategies that I highlight. I provide a customized IELTS preparation structure and the positive reinforcement that leads to confidence. I emphasize studying the IELTS format, scoring, and unique question designs until testing anxiety is replaced with confidence. Thank you for considering my qualifications when you select your next tutor. (Updated April 2016)

Proofreading

I frequently collaborate with writers of every description to proofread their academic or professional writing. Typically, I begin each proofreading session by ascertaining exactly what is required in the finished document before skimming the author's rough draft to confirm that it has all the necessary elements. Next, I read the document aloud to reveal the irregularities, suggest options to smooth or correct flaws, and assist the author to redraft their work. Finally, I reread the edited document aloud for the author's approval and to confirm that nothing has been overlooked.

Over the years, collaborative proofreading has proven to be the most thorough and cost-effective method of editing academic research papers, online coursework discussions, personal profiles, press releases, investigative summaries, and so forth in the least amount of time. (Updated: March 2016)

Public Speaking

Many of the ESL working professionals that I assist are expected to engage in American English discussions, offer verbal explanations, introduce visiting clients, or deliver PowerPoint presentations. I provide the American English pronunciation and elocution skills that speakers of other languages want when creating and delivering oral presentations. I frequently collaborate with clients to draft, proofread, and practice their presentations. I am asked to articulate the standard non-regional American-style English speech examples during practice sessions. Additionally, I provide the constructive evaluations required during the preparations for confident oral presentations. Thank you for your interest in my tutoring qualifications. (Updated April 2016)

TOEFL

As a full-time TESOL certified ESL instructor, I am ideally suited to prepare international adults for the challenging TOEFL iBT Test . TOEFL students trust and emulate the native-speaker's American English pronunciation that I model while offering my respectful suggestions. Students will also benefit from my one-to-one personal attention to their English fluency issues. I will explain how best to respond to the questions asked on the Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing practice tests according to The Official Guide to the TOEFL Test. Thank you for considering my qualifications when you are ready to prepare for your next TOEFL IBT Test date. (Updated: April 2016)

Writing

When asked about my Wyzant Writing tutor qualifications, I cite the Writing reviews offered by several of my enthusiastic clients. I tutored each of them on how to dramatically improve their academic or business English writing. To accomplish this, I draw upon my professional Journalist background, recent academic coursework, and scholarly writing resources.
Regularly, for example, I am called upon to read aloud and suggest how best to rewrite the required online college student discussions between classmates. Likewise, I suggest outlining academic writing projects by type complete with the designated scholarly citations and using the appropriate style format.
Some ESL working professionals ask me to proofread their email drafts aloud and suggest alternative vocabulary, sentence syntax, and punctuation. Similarly, I offer my applause or corrections to ESL client's employee evaluations, professional assessments, and project proposals. Occasionally, I am asked to draft some humorous American English comments to set the tone for an ESL client's future public speaking engagement.
Inevitably, I suggest the rewriting of overly vague opinions with the use of Bloom's Taxonomy Action Verbs to replace their simplistic synonyms. I advocate the liberal use of the many descriptive adjectives, comparative adverbs, and sentence connectives available to English language writers. I question pronouns and the nouns they refer to.
In my tutoring experience, it is not enough for me to rely, solely, upon my native-born American English intuition or my past journalist background. Rather, I must be prepared to defend my suggestions with the appropriate scholarly resources. Accordingly, I often use and recommend Google Scholar, McMillan Dictionary, Hacker’s Style Manual, Azar's English Grammar and Fogarty's Writing Guides to support my recommendations. Thank you for considering my Wyzant Writing tutor qualifications. (Updated April 2016)

Very Knowledgeable — Nathan is the best tutor I have ever been taught by. I am at the executive position at the organization and I ask him to teach how to speak/write the correct American business English. He always tries to understand my business situation and help me with how to do. I am very busy and request to change the date for the lesson, he is very flexible to do so.
