About Luis

If you need tutoring that will yield measurable results in Physics or Math, you need look no further.

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Cum Laude, and have been teaching these subjects since 1997.

Physics and Math require not just memorization but the ability to analyze and solve problems. That we will do from our very first session. Interacting with you will allow me to see where your problem is, whether it is lack of a solid base, all the way down to just lack of confidence. Just like in sports training, we will tackle the subject via exercises and problems that get progressively more complex, all the while with a friendly hand and mind. You will master analyzing problems, coming up with strategies, solving it and simple, common-sense ways of validating your solutions. You will unlock the potential of Math and Physics as tools to solve real-life problems.

To me, Physics and Math are languages for nature, just like my native language Spanish is a language for people. They are best mastered by using and producing with them, rather than by passively absorbing them like watching TV.

I look forward to working with your students so they can achieve the success they are capable of!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

DOS

I've been using DOS since the first PCs came out back in 1984, mostly as part of sequence of DOS commands in text files known as batch files.
I use visual helps in explaining what DOS commands do in terms of what the user needs to achieve. With the advent of Windows and DOS now transformed into the Windows Command Line, it is even easier to show students how files, directories and folders relate by means of the graphical representation in Windows Explorer.
Although DOS is not considered a programming language per se, using batch files makes it easier and fun to use sequences of commands to progressively achieve more and more complex tasks, in the process show how each command complement each other. Concepts like piping commands can be also taught that way.
The user achieves a better command of DOS by using a core set of commands such as HELP, TYPE and ECHO as tools to learn about and troubleshoot other commands as needed, building confidence as more commands are learned and, above all, used together to achieve user-oriented tasks.

Microsoft Windows

I've been exposed to MS Windows since the first stable version came out, which took advantage of more advanced modes of Intel microprocessors at the time.
Most courses that teach "Windows" actually teach MS Word with a dash of Windows here and there.
Windows has a plethora of basic tools for both text and graphics processing of surprising power, which can enable users to perform most basic tasks without the encumbrance and slowness of MS Office applications.
My tutoring style for this subject is to progressively introduce these Windows "applets" in terms of performing user-oriented tasks of more and more complexity.

Precalculus

This is one of those Math subjects that mastery is a given in a college-level Engineering major. As a student, I graduated with Honors from my alma mater, Texas Tech University, with As and Bs in all math coursework. I make this subject less difficult and much more fun by leveraging on my student's everyday experience and building from there, providing that vital link between Math and real life that validates and empowers their common sense.
