About Sandy

As an English teacher at the middle school, high school and college levels, I have over 30 years of experience teaching students to read, analyze, and understand all types of literature, to write well-constructed and grammatically correct paragraphs and essays, to learn and implement research methods both on-line and in a library, and to become well-prepared and confident public speakers. I've never tutored on-line, but I do have experience tutoring face-to-face with students.

What do I love about tutoring? I love to learn, and I want my students to love it, too. I believe every child is born with an inquisitive mind and that every child enjoys learning; unfortunately, for many children, at some point they see education as hard work, too boring, or simply irrelevant to their lives. As a teacher, I always hope that my students find joy and reward in learning.

I have a Bachelor's Degree, Master of Science for Teachers (MST) Degree, and an Educational Specialist Degree. In the mid-80s I was chosen as Teacher of the Year in my county. My favorite subject to teach is literature, probably because I'm a voracious reader. To enjoy and understand literature a reader has to know what words mean; therefore, studying vocabulary is essential. Writing is an essential skill, and learning to write well necessitates having an understanding of English grammar, sentence structure, and the writing process. I prefer to mingle the grammar lessons with practice in creating various types of sentences, and then move on to writing good paragraphs. A well-developed paragraph is a mini-version of the five paragraph essay; so, if a writer can create a great paragraph, he/she can also expand the skill into writing good five-paragraph essays.

I've studied disciplined-base arts education (DBAE) at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and I've taught workshops to teachers interested in DBAE. Finally, my favorite educational experience was being chosen to spend one summer at the University of Delaware and at the Shakespeare Center in Stratford-on-Avon, England, studying Shakespeare and the art of performing his plays. Following that wonderful summer, I challenged my students to memorize and perform A Midsummer Night's Dream. They loved it, and the audiences loved it.

Yes, learning can be challenging. It can sometimes mean time spent memorizing definitions, reading difficult literary works, or writing and re-writing essays. The rewards far exceed the efforts.

When I'm teaching, I'm pretty task-oriented, so I like to get started and stay focused. I'll always make sure my student understands the lesson's objective, and I'll do my best to help the student reach that objective. I also believe students learn best in an atmosphere of mutual respect where mistakes are seen as part of the learning process; after all, I'm still learning, too. Contact me, and let's learn together!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Proofreading

As a high school and college English teacher, I have read and graded thousands of student writings. In addition, I have written hundreds of essays and research papers as I pursued and achieved my Bachelors, Masters, and Education Specialist degrees. I not only correct errors but also point out stylistic flaws because good writing is more than just correct grammar!
