About Mara

My love of teaching I would have to say comes from my great curiosity. To learn something new every day is something that I strive for in my own life. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Parkside with a Bachelor's in Health Science, and I am in the process of working towards my Master's in Strength and Conditioning. I have worked with children for a few years in coaching and tutoring and have loved every minute of it.

I specialize mostly in math subjects from Pre-Calc down to elementary math. I can offer my help in preparing for exams such as the GRE, ACT, SAT, and ASVAB in English and math. My knowledge extends also to high school or college students taking courses in exercise science, exercise physiology, and strength and conditioning.

I also have experience in coaching basketball skills, since I have played since I was in sixth grade and played in the Youth Friendship Games when I was 18 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Since being a Health Science major I have knowledge in exercise programming and weight-training/bodybuilding.

My goals for each session, whether it be for studies or fitness, is to keep the student challenged but not overwhelmed. I can give home and practice tests and for the exercise student we would do before and after tests/photos so show your improvement.

I look forward in hearing from you and helping you achieve your goals in fitness and education!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I have been playing basketball since I was in the sixth grade on organized teams. I first played for the grade school that I attended in sixth grade and played for them for the following 2 more years under the same coach.

During the 8th grade I tried out for a traveling team and was accepted to the team. We would practice as a team 3 days a week and then during the summer months we would travel all over the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri and play in tournaments. This would last from about March to October when school basketball would start up again. I played with the same team for the following 2 years until the summer going into my junior year of high school.

Then I was asked to play for an Iowa Select Team. Every weekend during the summer months I would travel to Iowa and practice with a team and then we would travel together and play in tournaments throughout the midwest. The following summer I was asked to join an Illinois Select Team and would travel to southern Illinois every week to practice and play with the team.

The summer after I graduated high school I was asked to play in the Youth Friendship Games and represent the USA as a sports ambassador in Amsterdam, Netherlands. I spent 10 days there and in the first day I met my teammates (which were from all over the U.S) and then next day we started practicing. We had 3 days to practice with each other and build some team camaraderie and then the rest of the trip was spent competing in a "Teen Olympics" known as the Youth Friendship Games. Our team played at the highest level, level 1A, and we ended up taking 3rd out of 39 countries competing.

Since graduating and coming back from the Netherlands, I coached the freshman summer team for the next 2 summers and have helped with team practices since and helped the varsity team run drills. I have also stayed playing basketball in intramural and playing pick up games in gyms and recreational leagues.
