I have over 20 years of teaching experience within the classroom as well as teaching school within a hospital setting. I am most patient and skilled in meeting students where they are and in understanding their unique needs and strengths in order to promote learning. I am very patient in my approach to working with students with disabilities.
I have a masters in education with a certification in behavior disorders and in recent years have been able to work with students with moderate to severe autism. I have experience in teaching a variety of subjects, and I have a history of helping students with reading disabilities achieve grade-level improvements in that area.
I have many years of experience in working with special needs students. In the past, my students have faced a variety of issues, from mental illness, behavior disorders and histories of abuse (which interferes with learning) to having simple or clear-cut academic learning disabilities in math and reading. I understand that children with learning disorders possess relative strengths in other areas, such as areas of IQ, extra curricular talents, art, or even athleticism. I work to discover ways to use a student's strengths to find ways to work on their weaknesses.
I am a life long runner with a history of amateur competing in local road races. I was also a walk-on member of my college cross country team. I enjoy promoting the sport of running as well as finding ways to eat and live healthfully. I believe in wellness and prevention and in finding fun and creative ways for families to experience exercise and athleticism together.
It would be my pleasure to offer tutoring services to your child and family. I will make it a priority to get to know your needs, expectations and concerns in order to develop the best plan of action to help your child learn and succeed. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
