Learning and teaching has always been a joy for me; and sharing that knowledge with others has made my learning all worth the while. As a Magna Cum Laude graduate, I know that self-determination, hard work and dedication to learning can truly pay off. As a former child care provider, YMCA group leader and educationalist of 18 years, I have had the pleasure of not only mentoring and instructing hundreds of students but also helping them realize their own potential, build their self-esteem/study habits and see their grades improve.
While I like Math and Science, I have dedicated myself to learning and assisting others in building their English, Literature, Reading, and Writing skills. Having the ability to think, construct, deliver and comprehend messages is very important, especially in this world of technology which we live in. Thus, moving from text language to writing and spelling words out can be somewhat challenging and even overwhelming. My goal, however, is to make learning fun and rewarding, not overwhelming. I test after sessions to ensure you fully understand the lesson and help design study material to further enhance your skills. I also provide progress reports.
Everyone works at a different pace. Therefore, I am willing to work with you and meet you at your point of need. I am familiar with ADD/ADHD and understand some lessons and instructions must be modified in order for one to work comfortably and be productive. I am here to motivate, direct, encourage and help you advance your reading, writing, phonics and test taking skills.
I hold myself to a high standard; and while I believe that learning is fun, I take what I do seriously. I understand that we don’t all grow and comprehend in the same manner or at the same rate. For those reasons, I ask for feedback. I want students and parents, alike, to feel comfortable with their learning experience with me. I try to be fair and will not charge if the student and/or parent are not completely satisfied. I strive to help not hinder.
While I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, I do understand that life happens and emergencies arise. Therefore, I try to be flexible with time and offer makeup sessions.
To ensure that students have a quiet and comfortable area to study and work with me, I hold sessions at my church. Here I can teach private lessons and group classes. I am also willing to travel, within a ten mile radius, to another location if that is more convenient for the student and/or the parent.
I believe I can help strengthen your learning skills through fun, challenging, and innovative activities. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am an ordained minister of the gospel. I teach Sunday school and Bible study to individuals starting at age on up. Have taken extra courses through the National Baptist Convention of the U.S. and the Sunday school Publishing Board. I, presently, design and develop lesson plans and activities for biblical study at my church.
For 18 years I worked as a long-term sub within my school district. I started and ended the school year instructing students, writing lesson plans, administering tests and assisting students with assignments before, during and after school in the YMCA'S morning and afternoon program. I continue to work with students ages 4 - 18 in my church and community in building reading and writing skills.
