About Kathryn

Education is the key to a satisfactory life. I come from a long line of teachers - English, reading, music, life skills, et. al. - and respect that awesome profession. I have a B.A. from St. Lawrence University where I took child development classes and had advance placement in English. I taught Middle School, 6th grade homeroom and 7th-8th grade Team Teaching in math and science in the Liverpool, NY school system. I subbed in Syracuse, NY and in Eureka, MT middle and high schools, primarily in English and social studies.

Although I taught Middle School years ago I pursued an eclectic career in adjunct law support, human services and child protection. Informally, I tutored friends' children who needed help in early elementary subjects. Seeing a child's relief and joy in new comprehension is a wonderful and incredible payback. My own children and now three teenage grandchildren reflect students' varying experiences in our education systems. My goal is to help individuals achieve mastering challenges in their own journeys. I know there are many variables that create a successful outcome and that it involves commitment from you, myself and your parent(s). I am your advocate as long as you have the desire to learn. You will need to reinforce lessons with targeted homework and we will assess your progress (and mine) regularly.

I can be flexible and work with your cancellations to a reasonable degree. Patience is a virtue sometimes and we'll both need it! Your comfort level in your study space is important so the location will be discussed - my home or your alternative. Prior to my retirement, I spent over 12 years as a child advocate supervisor in Dependency Court. In 2010, I was honored by the State of Florida as the "Case Coordinator of the Year" in the Guardian ad Litem (CASA) Program. During those and earlier years, it was painfully obvious that success in school hinges on much more than a student's effort. While we cannot change the history of your life experience, we can work together to realize growing self-confidence and positive achievements in your education.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your early learning.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a B.A. from St. Lawrence University where I took child development classes and had advance placement in English. I tutored friends' 2nd and 3rd grade children in reading, phonics and English (language arts). I taught Middle School, 6th grade homeroom and 7th-8th grade Team Teaching in math and science in the Liverpool, NY school system (mid '60's). I substitute taught in Syracuse, NY and in Eureka, MT middle and high schools in the 70's and 80's, primarily in English and social studies. Tutoring requires a thorough understanding of the student's academic status, ability to learn, willingness to engage and family support. With parent's permission, I likely would discuss child's deficits with current teacher(s) to help formulate tutoring course/method.
