About Bob

My interest in tutoring dates back to my college days when I served as a substitute teacher for a local junior high school in order to help pay for my tuition. Working with a class size often in excess of 30 students, I quickly learned I had to be resourceful. Often, absent teachers did not leave lesson plans or assignments. I took it upon myself to research and develop lesson plans from teaching resources I found in the college library.

Soon, teachers who were going to be absent for an extended illness or family emergency were requesting that I cover their classes. The feedback from their students was extremely positive and they knew their students would not be losing valuable time in the classroom. I also took it upon myself to recognize that, in a large classroom, not every child is at the same place at the same time on the learning curve.

I began to offer students that I could see were struggling with a particular concept the opportunity to meet after school or during study hall if they needed extra help. I offered the same opportunity to those that seemed to be ahead of the curve who were looking for greater challenges. It was gratifying to see that the personalized attention to acknowledge and address these individual needs was not just truly appreciated, but really paying off in terms of tangible improvements both scholastically and attitudinally.

My next opportunity to educate and mentor would be the most important and most challenging: my own children. After reviewing the choices afforded by an overcrowded, underperforming public school system and the private school alternatives that were financially beyond our means, my wife and I made the decision to home school our daughter and son. We joined support groups for home schooling parents to gain access to successful methodologies. We tailored a curriculum and lesson plans that would ensure an enriching, engaging experience for our children from kindergarten through the eighth grade. This individualized attention really made a difference as both children excelled academically, ultimately scoring SAT and ACT scores making them eligible for Ivy League college admission.

The past 15 years of my career in marketing and media advertising as the principal of an independent consulting firm required me to become "the expert on the fly" in many areas including proficiency in computer skills to write compelling business proposals utilizing Microsoft Word, analyze a wide array of business metrics using Excel, and offer dynamic sales presentations using PowerPoint. Each new release of Windows offered new more powerful utilities that I embraced to be at the forefront of my profession.

My consulting business has been hired by numerous Fortune 500 companies to train sales and retail teams on everything from new sales processes and techniques to new product launches. Over the past three years, I have enjoyed working in an advisory capacity with the Institute of Reading Development. This organization offers summer reading programs for pre-K to Adult age groups. Emphasizing phonics, fluency, and comprehension skills with more than 800 classes and 1 million students annually, their philosophy is a simple yet powerful one: to instill a passion and love for reading.

In summary, I have been fortunate to have great mentors in my life, from my loving parents to caring teachers to exceptional professional colleagues. I have also experienced the satisfaction of numerous opportunities to share in that good fortunate, knowledge, and compassion by offering my expertise in these skills to students, clients, and my own children. I look forward to working with you or your child, whether it be for remedial needs or advanced studies for school or career.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I have been employed by Serta, Samsung, Sony, and Chrysler to train over 50 sales teams and event brand ambassadors on new product roll-outs in a retail environment. I have hired and trained more than 50 employees as a principal in two media advertising and marketing companies. Have taken courses in proper resume writing and interviewing skills, from the perspectives of both the employer and the candidate. My methodologies include role playing, case studies on keys to career success, and anecdotal advice to establish best practices.

Public Speaking

I began my career as a radio DJ which frequently required me to host various advertiser functions such as grand openings, promotional events, and parades. As a principal of two media marketing companies, I have often been called upon to speak as both a keynote and a panelist participant for numerous advertising organizations, including the AAA (American Academy of Advertising) and Streaming Media Conferences. I have presented marketing opportunities to local real estate offices of between 20-100. I was also a member of Toastmasters International, a non-profit organization developing public speaking and leadership skills through practice and feedback in local clubs since 1924.
