About CK

Hi,

I've been living in Savannah since 1990, where I'm currently a substitute teacher for Chatham County Schools. I'm a graduate of Hunter College in New York City, where my major was English Language Arts. I'm outstanding at coaching public speaking, and basic English tutoring.

I can also usually show an average or below average student how to be a better student.

I've just started job coaching and I've gotten good at that fast!

I'm currently setting up an office for tutoring in my home downtown, or I can arrange other places to meet.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I've taught Special Education full-time in West Virginia in the late 1980s, and recently I've taught Special Ed as a substitute teacher at various public schools in Savannah. My Special Ed classes this school year included students with ADD/ADHD, standard Special Ed students, and autistic students.

Basketball

I've taught individual basketball lessons for over 20 years, and I've also been to an Atlanta Hawks training camp. Plus, as a substitute teacher, I've taught Gym for over 20 years as a substitute which has led me to cover calisthenics, basketball, tennis, and other sports. I've also been the Tennis Pro for a YMCA in Savannah, and gave private basketball lessons while I was there from 1993 to 1995.

Chess

I entered my first chess tournament way back in 1980 at Hunter College, and I won! That won me a year's subscription to CHESS LIFE AND REVIEW! I've played chess all over the United States, and in Canada and Scotland. I've also coached individuals in Savannah and have studied the game extensively. I've been working 3 jobs this year which has forced me to cut back on my chess, but when I play at a local coffeehouse, I usually win!

Elementary (K-6th)

First of all, my minor in college was Elementary Education. Second, as a substitute teacher in 3 states, I've substituted for elementary schools for more than 30 years. Third, I focus on methods that work: drills for times tables, quizzes for spelling, and lots of practice at writing--the 3Rs!!!

Public Speaking

I'm outstanding at public speaking, and at coaching public speaking. At Hunter College in New York City, I first entered speech contests in 1980, and here are two of my trophies from my first tournament at what was then the University of Southern Connecticut in New Haven: Original Oratory:"Genetic Engineering:Coming Now!" First Place Trophy; Prose: "The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury First Place Trophy.

After I finished college, I went on to work in radio in Mississippi as a disc jockey and sports announcer from 1982 to 1986.

If you want to get better at public speaking, hire me!

Tennis

I was the Tennis Pro for the Kanawha Country Club in South Charleston, WV in 1987 and 1988. Also, I was the Tennis Pro for a YMCA from 1993 to 1995. I've also taught private lessons in Mississippi--1982 to 1986--and in Savannah, and ran the first K-Mart Tennis Tournament in Yazoo City Mississippi in 1985. I specialize in working with left-handers. I consider students from ages 11 and up.
