I THINK I CAN HELP!
With over thirty eight years of teaching experience working primarily with pre-school and elementary students I have been able to help many children struggling to acquire the necessary reading skills to be successful in their classrooms. I do also have numerous years of experience working with older students to achieve grade level performance. I very much enjoy working with adult non readers working toward their own personal goals.
Initially trained many years ago, both my master's degree and subsequent EDS (Education Specialists Degree) are less than ten years old. I studied in Boston and have been trained to use researched scientifically-based programs and techniques that obtain results. My degrees are from Wheelock College and Simmons College. I have taught Pre-K, K, Readiness, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade. I also created a multi level reading lab, staffed and led it for a number of years where we worked with students with reading and math challenges. I have years of experience 1x1 with junior and senior high school students who were struggling below grade level and I enjoy working with adults to achieve personal goals.
Although I use a variety of techniques and approaches, my specialty is Precision Teaching, where one learns how to bring basic skills ,in any discipline ,to a fluent level. Being fluent ( reading with comfort and ease) equals retention, and therefore learning takes place. I have studied and worked directly with the developers of this technique and have recently been mentioned for my work in PT in a newly published text on the subject.
I begin by determining where the initial breakdown is for the student in the reading process - go in and repair, then build from there.
I am a grandmother of four and have taught all four to read. I moved here from the Boston area to help take care of the children and avoid daycare. I love my "new job" but am missing very much using my training and skills. I have to laugh when I say this, but teaching is my only best talent and I am anxious to get back to it at some level. I am known for patience and a never-give-up frame of mind.
Note : I use a number of manipulatives which make travel difficult. I am set up for at home tutoring, which I prefer. I will discuss alternatives but I currently tutor at my home. Observation is welcome if desired. I am free evenings and Sat. and Sun. to schedule appointments. I THINK I CAN HELP!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My qualifications for teaching students exhibiting dyslexic symptoms are: being the mother of one who is now a college professor, teaching identified students over a period of forty years, a Ed. Spec. Degree in Special Education and the creation and operation of a reading lab in a public school system that serviced up to sixty five identified students every day for five years. I do my best work when presented with a challenge.
I have taught students with learning challenges for 38 years. I have a degree in Early Childhood, a Master's Degree in Reading and an Education Specialists Degree in Special Ed. and behavior.
