Approved subjects are in **bold**.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

After taking courses called discrete math, I attended a summer workshop titled discrete mathematics. The course was designed for all age groups. Discrete mathematics is found in familiar settings. Most courses begin with many of the basic ideas in concrete settings, including games and general play, and progressively develop these ideas in more complicated settings and more abstract forms.

Systematic listing, counting, and reasoning; modeling using graphs (networks) and trees; iterative (ie: repetitive) patterns and processes; organizing and processing information; and following and devising lists of instructions, called “algorithms,” and using algorithms to find the best solution to real-world problems.

I began my teaching career as a fifth and sixth grade classroom teacher. Much of the day was spent teaching with a hand-on math strategy that was generally cross-curricular.

Elementary math is comprised of 5 basic building blocks -- numbers, place value systems, whole number operations, fractions and decimals, and problem solving.

If students can obtain a solid foundation, future success in math can be obtained.

Elementary math is a time to use a variety of teaching strategies including hands-on techniques to achieve understanding.

Besides teaching students what to learn, tutors teach them how to learn. He provides students with study skills and good study habits, as well as how to break complex issues down so as not to be overwhelmed.

A great part of a teacher's day is spent teaching study skills. As a classroom teacher, I modeled many ways to learn by expecting students to document the date and proceed forward by taking good notes. With the use of mnemonic devices developed by me or my students, they were able to memorize lists.

Good study habits are the foundation for success in school and follow us through life.

There are components included in the development of positive study skills which are organizational tools, study environment,

goals, will and motivation and learning styles.

I use observation, pre-testing, post-testing and modeling of good study skills to encourage desired outcomes.

I open discussion with students and parents to discover what works and try to emphasize consistent use of study strategies.
