About Patti

I have a Master's, possess 3 active licenses (Georgia, VA, and WV), and have practiced teaching for decades. I have been vetted by all school systems for whom I worked and passed all background checks including fingerprint checks. Plus I still have DOD privileges and possess a valid ID card and served as an Ombudsman for a nuclear sub, passing their scrutiny!

I have been a home bound instructor, after-school tutor, full-time private school and public school teacher; I was a learner for my Master's at Troy State ( 3.859/4.0 GPA); I later added an endorsement to my VA license in special education from Old Dominion University ( 4.0/4.0 GPA). I have taught reading 7 and 8, English 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12, World History 10, American History 11, American Government 12, Civics 8, and Geography 7.

I believe that learning is a shared experience, benefiting both teacher and student. Tutoring is a proactive approach since the student is not confined to physically limited spaces and schedules. Neither the family nor the student should expect to waste time: I bring to the tutoring classes dedication, drive, and hard work. My goal is short: my student succeeds-I succeed. I am a teacher and I love to teach. My years of teaching have given me the experience to support your child's educational desires or your personal drives!

To begin, contact me. I am waiting for you.

Thank you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I taught American History to high schoolers, and, to do that, I had to be licensed. My major in undergraduate work was social studies, plus I taught American government and civics which all tie in directly to the concepts of American history since our rebellion was a revolutionary idea and our "avant garde" creation of a democratic representative government was wholly unknown at the time. I graduated from my undergraduate college with Honors and I have a rather solid understanding of the writing process to boot. Thank you for permitting the option to explain why I feel I could provide a suitable experience to someone endeavoring to pass American History. I am eminently qualified to provide tutoring for any student in grades seven to twelve. Thank you.

Common Core

For the last decade I have been inundated with data on the Common Core, albeit I worked in Georgia with their QCCs and in VA with their SOLs and friends informed me of the FCAT. But I researched other areas for my remedial students' reading needs and found that the "Common Core" was not so common: whether you are in Alaska, Nebraska, or Ohio, nouns are noun, a predicate adjective does not become an adverb by changing its location, and tense is future not by location but by usage. It would be beneficial is all of the fifty states would adopt a common curricula for the good of the students who matriculate all over the country, but I cannot make that happen. As a former Navy spouse teaching in a Naval community, I know first-hand how hard it is for the children of the military to acclimate to a new school every 6-9 months. But for my two areas of teaching, I have the skills for the Common Core.

GRE

I researched the GRE; passed the WyzAnt required test to tutor it; having familiarized myself with the format, timing, and stress inducers of the GRE, it will be imperative to tutor you in a logical, strategic, win-win methodology.

The GRE is naught on how you err; the score is based on correct choices, precise strategy and reading comprehension. My years of late have been engrossed with reading strategies.

Envision your victory!
Patti H.

SOL

I have taught in VA since 2001; I have prepped students in both English and social studies for the SOLs; I have been a monitor and an actual tester for the SOLs; I have read and signed the state mandated forms and read the manuals for these exams for over a decade. I do not have the math skills nor the science skills. My fields are like my VA, West Va, and GA licensure: history, social sciences, and language arts. Thank you.

Study Skills

As a remedial reading teacher and a licensed special education instructor (General Curriculum, grades k -12), teaching students study skills is imperative. Students need to know how to study as well as what content to memorize, read, or use for a project.

Time management is a weakness for so many students; add to this the poor management of notes and handouts; how do students ts know what page/s to use for the next quiz, the next test

The first tasks the study skills tutor will share will be time and physical data management. Then, segue to a systematic method of maintaining the organizational planning.

But, study skills also require assistance with actual studying and this involves the how to study. Studying correctly is a skill to be taught: a student can use sticky notes, highlight the most important facts, use note cards, etc. For memorizing factual data, try mnemonic memory triggers (HOMES_the names of the Great Lakes).

Number one study skill is perseverance. The student must study and set up times for study. A time s schedule is required.

These are a few of the study skills I endorse and recommend
These are the skills I use.

Thank you.
