Hello! I am a longtime teacher who started with music but has since worked my way into teaching all other academic subjects. In 2012, I started my own school. I want to help more people, which is why I am making myself available to tutor on Wyzant.

A National Merit Scholar who was very academically successful, I made the perhaps unconventional choice to major in music at the University of Maine, where I received a full scholarship. After graduating summa cum laude, I took my first job teaching K-4 music in a public school. I learned that I have a deep passion for helping people to achieve their goals and even do more than they believe they are capable of. It turned out that teaching private music lessons was a better outlet for this passion than the public school gig.

I moved to Atlanta, where I was soon teaching lessons full time. I attracted so many referrals that it grew into a music school. Searching for my next challenge, I founded a school, where I spent several years teaching all academic subjects (science, history, math, and language arts). I discovered that teaching these subjects was just as fulfilling as teaching music.

Now, with eighteen years of full-time teaching experience under my belt, I would like to work with YOU! As a tutor, I involve students in the process of learning: not just paying attention to right or wrong answers, but how it feels to work on a concept. Many students who have struggled in a particular area have forgotten what it feels like when you truly master something. I help students to pay attention to the feedback they are getting, giving them the emotional and practical tools to tackle difficult concepts with confidence and build independence as a learner. Along the way, we learn to not just go through a procedure, but understand the WHY behind a concept. This is the shortcut that leads to dramatic progress -- sometimes very quickly!

I hope that the students I work with feel respected, valued, and heard. I try to keep things fun for them and make learning a game. I am an expert at pacing, breaking down tough concepts into manageable pieces, and meeting students where they are.

If you would like to study with a tutor who will help you get more done in less time, all while making the work as fun and motivating as possible, I think we could be a fit!

Oftentimes, students who are struggling have some bricks missing from their foundation. It's tough to build a house on a crumbling foundation! I help students rebuild that foundation, brick by brick, so that they can proceed with confidence and make faster progress than they ever imagined. It's challenging for both of us, but deeply satisfying.

I would love to help you see what you are capable of, whether it's in math, writing, science, or music. I'm all about helping you overcome any obstacles that might be cropping up in your way. You will be amazed at what you can do when you eliminate, with the help of a patient and creative teacher, the things that are holding you back. Let's get started!

Music

Drums,

Drums

I have been a drummer for over ten years. While I am not a virtuoso, I've played in plenty of bands and can create a customized program for you. While I can work with all ages, I am a particularly good choice for very young students. I have more experience with this age group than the typical drum teacher.
Guitar,

Guitar

I have been playing guitar since I was a teenager, and teaching nearly as long! I am a pro at getting students over common hurdles (learning to strum, playing barre chords, playing and singing at the same time, and fingerpicking). I am not the right choice for someone who wants to play lead guitar, but if you'd like to play and sing songs and even learn how to figure out songs on your own, I'm a perfect fit.

I have twenty years of experience teaching music theory to music students of all ages as a private instructor and director of a music school.

Songwriting

I have been a songwriter since my teen years. I've performed and recorded original music in a variety of settings. With my years of experience as a music teacher and an extensive knowledge of the history and development of pop music, I am an expert at breaking down the components of songwriting (chords, melody, lyrics, groove) and helping beginners develop the confidence to share their work. Several of my students have gone on to professional performing careers

Nice lady, very intuitive

Very in depth knowledge of songwriting. I learned a lot about writing songs. She went the extra mile to make sure I was well informed. I am very pleased with the info I received.

Casey is awesome

She knows exactly how to work with a complicated kid, who is both gifted and special needs. She was extremely effective teaching math skills one lesson and writing skills the next.

Jackie, 7 lessons with Casey

Excellent tutor

Casey did a wonderful and professional job working with our 8 year old in reading and language arts. She made some specific recommendations that we have implemented. Her knowledge of music is an added bonus in making the material more multisensory.
