About Nicole

I like to use the student's current text books and lessons to understand exactly what gaps exist and where improvements can be made. Then I create unique lesson plans to buttress a student in their weak areas and strengthen areas that are already strong. My youngest student was a six year old girl whose first language is Korean. I worked with her on English pronunciation, nouns and verbs. My most senior student was a Colombian male was 50 years old. We worked together on English pronunciation, comprehension, writing, and conversational skills. I also taught a class of advanced ESOL students ranging in age from 18 to 30. For this group we read Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart. Experience with grade school includes a male and female student both 12 years old (two different families). I assisted each student in Language Arts and Social Studies.

My degree from American University in Washington, D.C. is a Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism and Child Psychology (1994). During my college years I was often called upon to proof read the papers of fellow students. I could give pointers on better sentence structure and flow. Once I departed school I found myself in several impromptu situations to teach others. I began as a teacher of English as a Second Language working primarily with adult students in 2008. I volunteered with an ESOL program through Dunwoody Baptist Church in Dunwoody, GA. My tenure with them lasted 5 years. Then I began receiving referrals for elementary and grade school age children of my adult students. I worked with them for 6 years. I had 5 students with whom I met separately twice a week during the school year. As a human resources professional for the past 15 years I also teach individuals how to write resumes, and present themselves. This experience has primarily been used to assist students in applying to college and writing essays for scholarships.

Tutoring is fun because I can work one-on-one with a student and watch them excel in an area that was previously an area of struggle. While I recognize when a student succeeds I "work myself out of a job" that is the goal! The student is supposed to gain the skills they need so that they don't need me anymore.

I am a great English tutor due to several experiences. I lived outside of the United States in the early 1980's. I recognize that language informs some of the way our mind processes things. When students are learning English, especially as a second language, they have to process in a new way. Since I have worked with elementary students (ages 6 to 12), adult students (age 18 to 50), students from Korea and Spanish language countries, I have a unique understanding to common errors and ways to correct.

What my students in the past have enjoyed about me is my willingness to create tasks especially for them. I've used games, created games, and provided unique experiences to keep students engaged and on the path to meeting their goals. For example, I had a 12 year old boy who enjoyed word searches. I created word search game boards for him based on parts of speech. Another student was fascinated with cat's cradle and I taught her how to play between difficult lessons. I can do the same for you! When you contact me, we will make sure we are a good match so that you can realize your success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I am seasoned human resources professional with 15 years in the profession. In 2014 I earned the Senior Professional Human Resources certification. Career development is part of my experience in coaching adults and recent college graduates. I assist in all areas human resources including, and not limited to job search skills, personal presentation, and self determination in career development. I currently work with clients via phone and video conference to fill in their gaps as they work toward finding their next opportunity.

ESL/ESOL

Several years as an ESOL teacher for adults. The sponsor, Dunwoody Baptist Church, sponsored several workshops a year to assist teachers in gaining skills to better instruct students. Teachers also met regularly to buttress one another and give tips on instruction or working with a particular student.

Reading

I earned a BA in Journalism. I'm an avid reader, who makes the effort to select materials of interest to my students. I read the book too so that I can cater the lessons to the each student's particular needs. I have worked with elementary school students, advanced readers, and adults; native English speakers and English as a Second Language speakers. I use games, music, and puzzles to help teach concepts.

Writing

I earned a degree in Journalism and I am a human resources (HR) professional. In HR I write policies and procedures among other documents to clearly explain rules and processes to diverse populations. I also write articles, short fiction, and poetry.

In teaching writing I help students to understand subject -verb agreement, 'flow,' transitional phrases, appositive phrases, and other varying sentence structure to improve the quality of their writing.
