About Helen

In high school, I was actively involved in sports and clubs along with my studies. I was honored with awards for my academic work such as Honor Roll, Principal's List, Top 5, Who's Who, etc. I graduated from high school as my class' Valedictorian.

I went on to attend college at the University of Georgia where I studied Spanish (I studied abroad in Spain for 3 months) and also concentrated on Linguistics and Psychology. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in Spanish. My Master's work focused on Teaching Additional Languages and how the bilingual brain works.

I have been a certified Spanish teacher since 2004 and have been teaching at the high school level ever since. I teach Spanish levels 1-4 including Honors' classes. I have had specialized training in working with students with learning disabilities (especially ADHD), teaching ESL/ESOL, and teaching of boys. I seem to have a gift for explaining things in such a way that makes sense to my students. I also help them with their study skills and how to study. I love learning, teaching, and my students.

I have coached soccer and basketball for many years as well since I played both growing up.

I would call myself a "Jill of all trades" since I have a wide variety of knowledge to share. Even though I focused on Spanish in college, I consider myself a "Grammar Nerd" of both Spanish and English and am competent in helping students with their nature sciences and social studies classes as well.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
