About John

Welcome!

I'm really glad you decided to find someone to help you become a better student. I hope to be that person. I really enjoy sharing what I know with others. I especially enjoy teaching language and helping students communicate better.

I have been an educator (primarily English as a Foreign Language and Spanish as a Foreign Language) for over seven years. I have also taught other subjects at the elementary school level, specifically 4th and 5th grades and have taught in New Jersey and Florida. I studied Foreign Languages Translation at the University of Antioquia (Medellin, Colombia). In addition to this, I received a certification in Pedagogy (TKT) from the University of Cambridge, England. My experience goes beyond the classroom, as well. I have also taught for the American Red Cross and been a trainer for Scouting groups. All in all, I have experience teaching young children, teenagers, and adults.

All my students receive an initial FREE session where I learn about the student's subject general knowledge, learning style and any difficulties that call for extra help. After that, I help the student set up an improvement plan that includes scheduling future lessons and reviewing expectations on both sides. This is also an opportunity for the student and parent(s) to ask any questions regarding my methodology and to provide information about what has been tried in the past to help the student.

My teaching style is flexible and is aimed at satisfying the specific needs of each student, following their unique learning style (auditory, visual or kinesthetic) and their particular situation. I employ a very communicative, cultural, and practical approach that equips the student to not only find the answers but to learn on their own and to enjoy it. My rates and schedule are flexible and will provide a discount to a second student of the same subject and level in the same household as well as for qualified referrals!

Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. In the meantime, I encourage you to read the many wonderful reviews left by former students. I will be very happy to hear from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I had the privilege of teaching Bible (4th and 5th grades) at American Christian School in New Jersey a few few years ago and I loved it. Learning about Scripture should be fun and relevant to the students. For that reason, I aim to provide interactive lessons that encompass knowledge of Bible characters, stories and principles for godly living.

Depending on the needs of the student I am willing to create a study program that allows the learner to fearlessly dive into Scripture with tools that allow him to understand the context in which a passage was written as well as its purpose and find a correlation with his own spiritual journey.

When it comes to teaching young children about the Bible, I utilize my own experience and methodology, gained from teaching Sunday School at my local (interdenominational) church, and incorporate fun learning tools such as storytelling and bible trivia games that make an indelible impression and sparks interest in the hearts and minds of the students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been teaching elementary school for the last ten years.
The subjects I have taught include Science, Social Studies, Language, Math, Foreign Language, Penmanship, and Bible.
I strive to personalize the program for each student (tutoring) and each class (school setting) and endeavor to fine-tune the learning strategies lesson after lesson.

Study Skills

I have been working with students in elementary, middle, and high school for over ten years both in the classroom and on an individual basis to helped them acquired effective study skills. My approach is very hands-on and it aims at equipping, empowering, and encouraging the student to take charge of his/her own learning journey. Some of the study skills I teach include: goal-setting, time management, and organizational systems with folders/binders.

In goal-setting the student will learn:
How setting goals is connected to academic success
How to set SMART goals and achieve them.
How to keep track goals and be accountable

In time management the student will learn:
How to create a personal schedule/calendar
How to prioritize a list of assignments
How to set up reminders for events

In organizational systems the student learn:
How to declutter your backpack and desk
How to create and organize binders for school
How to set up an effective study space

Manuel is an outstanding tutor...hands down. I was looking for someone to help my 2nd grade son in math and a few other subjects after moving to Destin this summer. Manuel is knowledgeable, kind, patient and he absolutely makes learning fun for my son, Andrew. When we started working with Manuel my son was getting failing grades in math and now has gained so much confidence in his abilities and ha
