About Katelyn

With my certification, experience, and credentials, you may be confident that I am qualified to help your student improve his or her grades, test scores, and academic perception. I have successfully helped each of my students significantly improve in all of these areas with measurable scores as evidence.

As a private academy teacher, I understand the difficulties students have in a classroom setting. I also understand the concerns and frustration parents have with the education system. As a private tutor, I am able to provide each of my students with engaging and individualized instruction. I work with their school curriculum, so as to raise their grades, their test taking skills, so as to increase their scores, and their specific strengths and weaknesses because your student is not a carbon copy.

I graduated from the University of Georgia and I am fully certified at the T-4 level to teach English Language Arts in grades 6-12. I am currently a high school and middle school teacher at a private academy; during nonschool hours, I tutor professionally.

Literature ought to be taught holistically through using all the language arts to enable students to become active participants in their own learning. Through literature and the guidance of qualified teachers and tutors, students can cultivate and sharpen their perspectives of themselves and of society as they transact with texts as writers, readers, and interpreters. My goal for students is to help them participate in exciting, beneficial experiences with literature and encourage them to become life-long learners engaged with self, society, and the whole of life. These goals can be fostered and met through individual tutoring in which I can provide focused attention and detail to a student's needs.

During my education, I have been both a classroom teacher and private tutor. I have worked with students of high needs. I am aware that many students learn better in a more focused and individualized environment. This is not because of a difference in intelligence, but because of learning styles and multiple intelligences.

If you are an invested parent of a student or you are a student wanting to enhance your education in the language arts (grammar, reading, writing, vocabulary, test taking, etc.), I would be glad to help you.

I also work with the home-school community of students, so please contact me if this is your need.

Best regards,

Katie

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I believe that the best way to help a student improve in his or her phonics skills is to take turns reading aloud and to help him or her learn the phonetic alphabet. I do have experience tutoring elementary school students in reading comprehension and pronunciation. Past WyZant hours have been with this type of student. To remain professional and accurate, I would like to take students through a highly rated phonetic workbook in accordance with their age and skill level.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is the primary fear in the polled human population, yet many of us cannot go through life avoiding it. Our careers and education will require us to speak publicly on some level during the course of our lives. I began as a nervous public speaker, but high school, college, and teaching have forced me to practice and overcome any anxiety. Now I speak with confidence and I even enjoy being in front of a crowd. I want to teach others to do the same.

I have given numerous presentations in my educational career through which I have developed confidence and skills in public speaking. My most recent presentation was presenting my portfolio to college professors to secure my teaching certification. Now, I daily am a public speaker to groups of 25 students.

I also took a course in public speaking and learned specific skills in speaking publicly, including skills to overcome public speaking fears. Recently, I attended a conference and participated in a public speaking session, providing me with more information about how to help others. There are specific mental, emotional, and physical techniques people need to learn in order to stand in front of an audience effectively because public speaking involves all of these dimensions of the human nature.

Public speaking is an important part of life and the confidence and ability to do it will further a person's vision for his or her life. I will gladly impart those skills from my experience and my continued experience to others.
