About Douglas

My name is Doug. I completed my Bachelor of Science degree at M.I.T. and have a strong background in Math and Science as well as the Humanities.

The first thing I tell my tutee is that I have only one rule: If you have a question, you MUST ask it! My philosophy toward learning (and tutoring) is simple. The aim of learning is mastery, but understanding is the prerequisite. Across all subjects, the key to gaining understanding is by asking questions. Imperative to understanding is being able to articulate the “What?” and the “How?” as well as being able to explain the “Why?” No question is too simple or unimportant. Every question gets treated with respect and seriousness. No judgments. I have found that this approach helps my students gain understanding by identifying the gaps in their knowledge creating confusion. Moreover, it prevents further gaps from developing as we move forward in mastering more material.

I discovered my passion for tutoring by happenstance. Since I was a child, I have had a love for learning (especially math and science) and a desire to understand how things work, why they do, why things happen, what things are, etc. This has continued as I have grown, and persists even now. My pursuits led me to what I consider the holy grail of math, science, and learning: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Among many other things I learned at MIT, I learned that if you know something well enough to teach it to other people then you TRULY understand it. Thus, I found that helping my peers in study sessions inadvertently aided me in furthering my own understanding. It is a symbiotic process. I first began volunteering as a tutor at local a high school both as a way to give back and as a way for me to remain sharp in my understanding of a given subject. Over time I found it gratifying simply to help my students reach that very same “Aha moment” I have always so diligently sought.

I began working with students of all sorts from middle school to graduate students, and everything in-between. While working with the NYU Child Study Center in New York, I learned how to interface well with individuals that also have ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder. Consequently, my life experiences have developed me into a patient, adaptive, and capable tutor able to explain even the most challenging of concepts thoroughly and in a way relevant to my tutee.

If you want a tutor that is passionate about learning as well as capable, email me. I am good at what I do. Hopefully, we can work together soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked closely and extensively with children and adults diagnosed with ADHD. Having been trained to administer cognitive and achievement assessments such as the WASI, WIAT, and TOWRE along with being certified to conduct MRI scans for this population, I am confident that the skills that I've learned to manage individuals with this psychiatric disorder are robust and sufficient to enable me as a competent tutor.

Algebra 2

I am knowledgeable in math from pre-algebra to differential equations.

Aspergers

I have worked with children and adults diagnosed with PDD, which entails Aspergers. I have been trained to administer cognitive and achievement assessments such as the WASI, WIAT, and TOWRE along with being certified to conduct MRI scans for this population.

Autism

I have worked extensively with children and adults diagnosed with PDD. I have been trained to administer cognitive and achievement assessments such as the WASI, WIAT, and TOWRE along with being certified to conduct MRI scans for this population.

Bible Studies

Having grown up in the church and with my father being a Baptist minister, I have been steeped in Biblical knowledge. There are two aspects that make me a good candidate for this subject: 1) I was a Sunday school teacher at my church and bible study teacher for the CC Christian Fellowship at MIT. 2) I am good with exegesis. Not all of Bible study is religious. Much of it is scholarly (much like philosophy). Having had extensive training throughout the years in both makes me a capable teacher.

Special Needs

I have worked closely and extensively with children and adults diagnosed with PDD, ADHD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, etc.

Study Skills

I have been tutoring for over 8 years, and have worked with visual learners, auditory learners, tactile learners, learners with ADHD, etc. One-on-one sessions with a student will allow me to help identify deficits in their study approach, and to make constructive recommendations to improve their learning process across all facets of life.
