About Brad

With over nine years of teaching experience, I have continued to demonstrate high levels of achievement for moving students forward. As a naturally curious person, I believe learning is a life long process and I have yet to stop learning. I am fluent in English and American Sign Language.

One of my favorite parts about teaching is identifying the one unique characteristic about a student that makes their eyes glow with wonder and creates the spark of interest. Students from my first years of teaching are now in their 20s and come up to me and thank me for giving them a passion for reading that they had never had before my class. I took each student and helped personalize my recommendations so what they read was something they wouldn't be about to put down.

I have taught high school Biology and middle school Life Science in the past. I also have a high level of interest in this field because of my personal hobbies. This area is easy to bring to life for students to help them see and learn through hands on demonstrations and experiments.

In the two years I taught ESOL, I managed to learn basic phrases in each of my students home languages so I could greet them daily in their native language. We took time to celebrate cultural diversity in the classroom as well. With one particular student from Mexico, she arrived at the beginning of 7th grade with no English. In less than a year and a half, she passed the state writing test and scored higher than most of her native English speaking counter parts. While teaching ESOL, I also maintained a 100% pass rate for my students on standardized testing in the areas of English and Language Arts.

I have also taught Literature for 7th and 8th grade and remedial English to Deaf students at the high school level. I have strong writing skills and know how to help students rework their writing through an interactive process using track changes in word so the students can see the changes and begin to notice patterns of common errors or where they made simple mistakes. We walk through this process together from starting with a hand written paper to a finished typed paper and keep each draft so we can see the progress and changes along the way. (A great way to help the student build self-confidence in their improvement).

I am here to make you successful. I think outside the box and try to always make learning engaging and fun. I do not give up easily and am always willing to go back to the drawing board to help find a new approach if what we are doing isn't working. I am able to help in any subject area except math. If you need help with math...keep looking for another tutor. I probably need one myself. I have taught K-12 in all subject areas (even some math, but at the elementary level).

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Sign Language

I attended Gallaudet University (only deaf university in the world) for classes in American Sign Language. Have taught daily in a classroom environment for over 4 years teach middle and high school science in American Sign Language. Have a Deaf 21 year old son. On my most recent Signing Proficiency Exam, I scored a 3 out of 5 for true proficiency in ASL. This was administered by Gallaudet University. Deaf teachers at the school scored in the range of 3.5-5.
