Berea College (Physics and Math)
I earned a double major in Physics and Mathematics from Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. My plan is to earn a Ph.D in either Physics or Electrical Engineering in the future. Berea has a work-study program which requires all students to work a number of hours throughout the week. During my time at Berea, I worked as a Teaching Assistant (tutor) in the Physics Department for at least ten hours each week. I have also held a secondary position in the Math Department where I tutored in subjects ranging from Developmental Math courses to Differential Equations. My favorite subject to tutor is Calculus 1 because it is fun and I continue to learn each time I explain a concept concerning it. I have had great students who I have tutored compliment me in helping them understand the material. I have also helped them sustain their confidence and improve drastically in their academic performance. My philosophy on tutoring is to discover why the student does not understand the material, focus on helping the student understand the material and allow the student to continue to practice with the material until they become comfortable doing it. Also, if the student is unable to draw what the problem means, it is highly likely that they do not understand it. In general, I get a good and accomplished feeling inside when I see a student's face light up with excitement because they understand it. I smile when I have helped others smile. Away from the realm of academia, I enjoy making music, track and field, video games, Wing Chun Kung Fu and learning about Physics, Electronics and the Cosmos. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
During my time in college, I have tutored various students in their College Algebra and a huge variety of courses over the course of four semesters and they experienced much improvement.
