About John

I have tutored in my early career in computers. I have a vast and varying knowledge base to draw from. I worked 38 years in the automation industry. I programmed training scenarios as an Air Traffic Controller. I designed software for a large mailer as a method of tracking the number of returned packages during peak mailing season. I designed a small mail tracking device that provides the signature of recipient.

I worked with Large PBX (Private Branch Exchange) Telephone Systems. I have training in both Cobal and RPG on Mini Computer Systems. It has, however, been many years since I used that knowledge. I was also certified as a Master Focus Database Programmer through the software company.

I have tutored in the past and also designed and taught in a large company's training facility. I designed the written/lecture portion of the program, including hands on work in the lab and also installing the network within that facility so that all students could see how the information moved from point A to point B. I get tickled watching people as the information that we discuss begins to sink in. Watching them gain experience with the product and become more confident in themselves with the product is very exciting to witness.

I have worked with many software products: Microsoft Office package, Microsoft Windows 3.0 through Windows 7. I currently work with open source free software to remove the huge expense of purchasing the current Microsoft and other productivity software. I use OpenOffice.org Office package to replicate everything I can do with Microsoft Office; Firefox, Waterfox, Safari, and Google Chrome for the Browser, Password Safe to encrypt and protect your passwords and ID's to keep your identity protected, Filezilla for an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Client and Server, IOBit software for system maintenance, virus protection, and malware protection (this package is pay for use with licenses for three machines each), Claws-Mail and Thurderbird Email, Mozilla Backup to backup your profiles in Thunderbird and Firefox Software, also VLC Video Lan Media player software which reads and can change many video/audio file types. I also have a great amount of experience in proprietary company software that I used/installed/maintained/trained people on.

If you are looking for someone to share knowledge with, then I am interested and happy to tutor you. I keep the lessons light and interesting. All of my lessons are hands on with the student, with discussion and examples to help pass the knowledge along to you the student. I am a professional and my experience is real life experience with industry standard software and hardware as well as open source freeware to assist those businesses and individuals who cannot afford to purchase and upgrade all the software out there to run a business or home automation platform.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Baseball

I played and coached both baseball and slow pitch softball for 31 years. I have coached travel teams, local Recreation Department softball and baseball teams. I have worked with and coached adults as well as boys and girls ranging from age 8 to 16.

Microsoft Outlook

I have worked with Microsoft Outlook for over 15 years. I was responsible for setting it up and providing support for as many as 200 users within a network.

I understand its strengths when used alongside the Microsoft Office Package, and likewise its weakness when not used with that package.

I am familiar with backing it up and transferring profiles from one outlook to another or from outlook to a package like Thunderbird. I am very familiar with training it for spam and also creating rules to move mail to different folders and many other operations.

Microsoft Windows

I have worked with Microsoft Windows since 1989. I have worked with and networked Microsoft windows in a large business environment and also a small business and home network. The easiest to me was Windows for Workgroups 3.11. I miss my .ini files.

Microsoft Word

I enjoy Microsoft Word more than any other Microsoft product there is. The number of different things that you can do withing Microsoft Word make it probably the most powerful piece of the Microsoft Office package.

I have trained and tutored Microsoft word since 1990. I originally worked with Microsoft Word on a Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.11. I created a training program for this subject which included Beginning Intermediate and Advanced.

I enjoy working with people and watching them grow as they learn each new capability of the product. Watching them create very technical documents for the first time is very rewarding.

Networking (Computer)

I have been networking computers since 1976. I began networking as an Air Traffic Controller. After ten years there I moved on to a large business with 134,000 locations and planned and managed the installation of this network. It was a Microsoft Windows 4.0 Installation. From there I moved to two other large businesses where we worked with a Windows Network.

Softball

I played and coached both baseball and slow pitch softball for 31 years. I have coached travel teams, local Recreation Department softball and baseball teams. I have worked with and coached adults as well as boys and girls ranging from age 8 to 16.

Web Design

Generated an intranet site for the U.S. Postal service to track installation of wiring, hardware, and Microsoft Network software. Required creating a place for each of the 134,000 offices to list wiring jobs, arrival of hardware, and the final installation of the network software. Maintained this site for one year.

I have also generated a software website that allowed technical people in the postal service to remotely view technical documentation for hardware and software that they supported in the field. Maintained this site for about three years.

I have generated multiple personal websites for friends. I enjoy creating websites and helping people create them. It does take work but the rewards when you view your new site are substantial.
