About Van

Van is an energetic singer who has been singing most of his life. He began singing in the youth choir at his home church about the age of 8. Although Van has been singing gospel music most his life, he realized at an early age that he was passionate about all genres of music. In high school, Van started his formal vocal training. Van was a part of several operas while in college such as Cosi Fan Tutte, Carmen Jones, Amahl, The Night Visitors, Tannhauser, and Lucia di Lammermoor. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drums

I have 28 years experience as a drummer. I started playing the drums when I was eight years old at my dad's church in Indianapolis, Indiana. I can sight read and play by ear. I believe that all musicians should read music. I teach drum theory and notation.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've been teaching since 2000 after leaving Kentucky State University. I taught all the Math and Science for grades fourth through 8th at True Belieth Academy in Indianapolis Indiana.

General Music

I have 20+ years in music. I will start a general music class by teaching basic theory. For example I would teach solfege. I would teach lines and spacing. Every Good Boy Does Fine in the treble Clef and FACE which is the spaces. Bass Clef Good Boys Do Fine Always and the spaces. All Cows Eat Grass. I would teach notes and their values. This is just a start.

Piano

I've been playing the piano since about the age of eight. I'm currently 36 now. I went to college on a music scholarship but my music experience began way before that. My dad is a pastor in Indianapolis Indiana. I started playing the drums first but I saw early on that piano was the instrument of choice. I'm currently the worship pastor for my church. I play the piano and lead in worship Sundays and Wednesdays. I read music and play by ear.

Swimming

In high school I was the Captain of the swim team at Arlington High School. I'm 36 now and I've been swimming for 26 years. I served as a life guard for 5 years after high school. Swimming is how I stay in shape. I currently swim daily.

Voice (Music)

I have extensive voice training. I've been singing in church since I was little kid. I started my formal voice training when I was in high school and the early 90s. In 1996 I went to Kentucky State University on a vocal performance scholarship. While at Kentucky State University I was in many of the operas that the school performed. After two years of being a vocal performance major I decided to change my major to biology but I still continued my voice lessons. I've been leading worship since about 1990. So as you can see I have 20+ years of music in my blood.
