About Jamelle

Teaching is second nature to me. My mother and grandmother both taught at all levels. They taught me the joy of learning and of seeing others catch the spark. When my actions help others enjoy learning, I know I am fulfilling my purpose in life.

I am a retired teacher of French in the Atlanta and Fayette County Public Schools, and have served as substitute teacher in Atlanta, Fayette, and Coweta Public Schools. Additionally, I've taught swimming and spiritual subjects in my church educational programs.

At the start of my career in education, I founded a private school in New York City so that I could direct my children's learning experiences. For the next four decades, I have been delighted to help countless students in New York and Georgia embrace learning as a pleasurable undertaking.

I was born into a family where speaking impeccable English was taught from the cradle. Throughout childhood, in addition to English assignments from school, we read the Classics and other literature at home. my mother make games built around lessons she wanted us to learn, and she assigned a writing exercise everyday - from thank-you notes for gifts received to reviews of books we were reading throughout the year. She knew that "practice makes perfect." In other words, the more one writes, the easier it becomes on its way to being second nature.

In middle school I studied Latin and Spanish, then started French in high school. In college I majored in French, minored in German, and studied Spanish. In graduate school my master's degree was in teaching French in secondary schools.

Learning foreign languages helps fine-tune an understanding of English - the roots of words, the construction of sentences, conjugation, even spelling. By learning other languages, I've deepened y proficiency in teaching English.

I've worked as a substitute teacher with responsibility for Common Core subjects for almost two years in Coweta Public schools. Once I've substituted at a school, I am regularly requested by teachers there to return as their substitute teacher. And my heart has been warmed by accolades from the students. One said, "If substitute teachers were given a 'Teacher of the Year' award, I would nominate you."

My grandmother, mother, and uncle had exquisite handwriting. I grew up at a time when beautiful handwriting was highly valued in schools and in workplaces. The compliments I received on my writing encouraged me to do even better in my quest to emulate my mother's beautiful penmanship.

We didn't use typewriters (there were no computers) for homework assignments, personal letters, or thank-you notes in those days; and each day we wrote one or the other. We presented our handwriting for inspection and instruction for making our penmanship the best it could be. I remember those lessons and take pride in being able to pass them along.

I have a knack for understanding what challenges may be interfering with each individual student's ability to learn a particular lesson. And I always find ways to construct a routine that helps us comfortably break down those barriers and move the student to a place of excitement and joy in learning. My methods keep encouragement at the center of all that we do in our sessions. It would be my pleasure to work with you to achieve your goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
