About Kristen

I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I received a Ph.D. in Physics in 2011. Before that, received bachelor's degrees in both Mathematics and Physics from the University of Sydney in Australia. Helping people has always been my passion and, consequently, I have worked as a private tutor and teacher for over 15 years. Being well aware of the fact that not every student learns in the same way, I do my best to meet my students where they are, wherever that might be. My goal has always been to help my students believe in themselves and know that they can do difficult things. I base my teaching philosophy on patience, compassion and a willingness to try something new if an initial approach doesn't work. My teaching techniques as well as my broad knowledge in the subject area have made me an effective and well-liked teacher. I love what I do and look forwarding to helping you meet your academic goal!

Cheers!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I fared quite well on the ACT, receiving a 34 composite score. I quite familiar with the exam as I have used sample tests in my tutoring sessions to help prepare my students for years. I also have a strong background in mathematics and science which has made me particularly proficient in the Science and Math sections.

ACT Science

I fared quite well on the ACT, receiving a 34 composite score. I quite familiar with the exam as I have used sample tests in my tutoring sessions to help prepare my students for years. I also have a strong background in mathematics and science which has made me particularly proficient in the Science and Math sections.

Algebra 1

I took algebra I for the first time when I was in 5th grade and immediately fell in love with the subject. Although it can be a challenge at first (it's a completely new way of looking at math!), I love the feeling of seeing thing "click" for my students. I am genuinely excited about the subject and try my best to pass it along to those I teach!

Algebra 2

Of the many different types of math we learn in school, algebra is one of the more important ones because algebra problems appear on everything from college entrance exams to the GRE and MCAT. Furthermore, an increasing number of college degrees and certificates require you to take algebra. Although it can be a challenge at first (it's a completely new way of looking at math!), I believe everyone can succeed and do my best to teach to way each student learns. I love seeing things "click" for my students and, better yet, the pride and self-confidence they feel that comes along with their success. Teaching is my passion and I always do my best to help you meet your academic goal!

ASVAB

I took the ASVAB for the first time when I was in high school and again when I was an undergraduate in college, receiving a perfect score both times. Later, I moved to Fort Campbell, KY where I worked at the Army Education Center helping soldiers improve their ASVAB scores every day. Improving your ASVAB score is often an important factor for promotions and applications for special schools. Whether you are taking this exam for the first time or looking to improve your score, I'm your girl!

Calculus

In Newton's efforts to understand the physical world, he invented calculus as a means of describing it. From the arc of a baseball as it soars into the stands to motion of planets as they move through our solar system, most everything that is tangible to us speaks the language of calculus. As a PhD in physics, I have studied this area of math for 15 years. I use my knowledge as a scientist to provide context for more abstract forms of math - something I have found really helps my students to visualize and understand the subject material.

Linear Algebra

I completed a Bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from the University of Sydney, which required me to take a linear algebra course, as well as several courses that had lengthy linear algebra sections. I received high marks in each of these classes. I have tutored linear algebra privately for 10 years and feel I am qualified to tutor this course at the college level.

MCAT

I worked as a Physics TA as both an undergraduate and a graduate student. In doing this, I encountered several pre-med students who needed help preparing for the MCAT and asked me to help them. I starting giving private prep sessions for the MCAT in 2005. I have a 100% pass rate and have helped students improve their scores in all sections.

Great Tutor

Kristen is tutoring our 9th Grade daughter in Conceptual Physics. She has a great way about her and understands how to explain concepts in a way that our daughter can understand. I would highly recommend Kristen.
