In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught elementary school both in the US and abroad for over ten years. My particular specialties are in working with children in the areas of phonics, reading comprehension, math problem solving, and critical thinking skills. The approach that I find most effective is to focus on working with students as active, hands-on learners.
Teaching phonics is something I love doing. The method I prefer is that of focusing on vowels and vowel patterns in words so that the student can not only know the sounds but know when to use the sounds. For example, when you come across a word you do not know how to decode, look for the vowel pattern -- if a vowel is followed by a consonant it is likely to be short, if not it is likely to be long. When looking at a longer word, if you come across a vccv pattern, the syllable line generally will be between the two consonants, etc.
Becoming a skilled and thoughtful reader is a goal we all have for our children. When reading is taught in a systematic and sequential way, combined with material that captures the interest and imagination of the reader, students can and do become proficient readers who love reading. I love being a part of this process.
