About Clay

Curiosity and discovery have brought me great joy and freedom that I have been compelled to share with others from the moment I could speak. And I have found the fulfillment of celebrating another's success through my teaching is just as sweet as having succeeded myself.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's Degree in Environmental Engineering from Clemson University. I spent two years in graduate school leading open-ended research courses to undergraduates. In the spring of 2013, I taught two introductory engineering courses to freshmen at Tri County Technical College. Many of these students were in a partnership program and transferred to Clemson where they completed their Bachelor's degrees. Most recently, I taught AutoCAD technical drafting at Gwinnett Technical College Spring 2017, and I am teaching Introduction to Engineering at Morehouse College to highschoolers as part of the Upward Bound program.

The way that I tutor is particular to the student and based on three distinct goals. First, I learn in what ways my pupil learns best so I can personalize the learning plan to the student. Second, I apply this style of teaching with each lesson until the student is confident enough to teach others the lesson himself. Then third, I transform the student's view until they see the lesson in the world around them--a mathematical formula in the way that the leaves move with the wind or a rhetorical strategy in the body language of two people chatting at the park. It is in applying knowledge that words on a page become truly powerful and the efforts of learning become fruitful.

My primary subjects of interest are math, music, the sciences, and reading. My qualifications in each of these ranges from the 10 years I spent studying and working in engineering, math, and science to the 18 years I have spent studying and performing music.

I offer a personalized experience in flexibility with scheduling and in teaching style. I invite you to send me a message, ask me any questions you have, and find out more about how I can help you succeed!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have used math academically and in my career almost daily for the last ten years. With algebra being the foundation for the more advanced mathematics I use, it is something I can apply naturally and with little thought.

Algebra 2

As an engineer, I have extensive experience applying mathematics to real world problems. My knowledge covers algebra and more, and with me as your tutor, you will have a great resource available to you.

Calculus

I have a strong background in mathematics and applied mathematics from a bachelor's and master's program in engineering and three years of experience working as an engineer and teaching college level engineering students. My knowledge extends beyond memorizing equations and into learning by applying study skills and problem solving.

Elementary Math

As an engineer, I have mastered the foundations of mathematics. As a young father, I love working with young people, and they love working with me!

General Computer

I have been using computers for over twenty years and have mastered the practice of learning new software. My experience ranges from Microsoft Office to Photo Shop to technical design and drafting tools.

Geometry

In college, I completed two degrees in engineering which required a high level of proficiency in math. I have been applying geometry in my academic studies and in my career for the past ten years, and I am prepared not only to teach the material, but to demonstrate how it is used in the real world.

Guitar

I have been a student of music for more than twenty years, during which time I studied piano formally for six years. I am a self-taught guitarist, and I have been playing guitar for fourteen years. Over the years, I have taught lessons informally, and I have never stopped teaching myself.

MATLAB

I have used MATLAB extensively both academically and in real life applications for the last 10 years. Most recently, I taught college engineering students to use MATLAB as a tool for developing their problem solving skills, and I developed analytics in MATLAB working as a part of a software development team.

Mechanical Engineering

I hold a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Clemson University. Over the last ten years, when I haven't been studying, I have been working in a related but various disciplines, including manufacturing, R&D, design, and software. After completing my master's degree, I taught engineering at a local community college, and I told my students that in every form, engineering is a discipline of problem solving. To declare a particular major within engineering is to specify your preference and focus area, but it is uncommon for an engineer to work ONLY within their discipline for the duration of their career. So to my core, I am a problem solver, and a veteran based on the variety of roles I have filled over the years.

Microsoft Excel

I have been responsible for developing and maintaining Excel spreadsheets tracking technical information in different roles for the last eight years. Most recently I worked as a software engineer using Excel to build and validate datasets.

Physics

I have a bachelors in mechanical engineering, and in graduate school, I did research in earth mechanics. Physics is a familiar subject to me, and one which I have applied both in school and in my career as an engineer.

Piano

I have been a student of music for more than twenty years. Of that time, I spent six years studying piano formally, and I have continued studies of the piano on my own since high school. I have taught lessons, both formally and informally.

Prealgebra

I studied engineering for seven years and worked as an engineer for the last three. As a result, I have mastered the concepts and application of algebra.

Python

I worked as a software engineer developing tools in Python. I used test driven development, placing emphasis on the robustness of the code. My work centered on back-end analytic tools, meaning I developed the user interface and the underlying systems for managing datasets and applying mathematical algorithms to the data.
