Georgia State University (Music Business)
I am a music enthusiast who loves the art and wants to do everything that I can to teach students how to play and read music for the piano and further their musical development. I started with music in elementary school with the school choir and continued through high school. I then studied voice performance and Music Business at Georgia State University while taking piano lessons privately. I have taken piano lessons for a little over 11 years and have since worked on original musical compositions for use in small independent films and clips. I look forward to working with the students and joining them on their musical journey.
Using the knowledge that I have gained through private piano lessons, I will use techniques as outlined in teacher/student handbooks. I will go over correct posture, work on easy ways to identify notes and keys on the piano, and go over proper sheet music reason techniques. For intermediate players, we will work on repertoire representing different styles of music and introducing new techniques (IE. Playing independent left hand and right hand parts, Stride piano, classical ornaments, etc). I will also cover improvising techniques and how to accompany other musicians. I will make sure to work at each students pace and utilize tools that work best for each individual student. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have studied music at Georgia State University and have graduated with a degree in music business. I have taken private piano lessons for 10 years and have developed skills and techniques in various styles over this period. Over the course of this period, I have performed in various piano recitals and also have composed original music. For tutoring, I plan to work out of various piano workbooks designed for teaching piano students at all levels. I will work with the student on developing proper posture, identifying the keys on the piano and work on various hand techniques and exercises. I will also train students on sight reading and develop creative strategies to make it fun for them. I also present repertoire in different styles and levels depending on the students piano level.
