In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have used Adobe InDesign for 10 years as a document layout tool. I am proficient using InDesign's Variable Data function to merge textual and image data into personalized documents. This data capability extends to configuring the actual data sets in Excel or equivalent spreadsheet applications. I have also used InDesign to create eBooks. My print, design, and typography background enables me to appreciate and take full advantage of InDesign's advanced text-handling functions.
I began learning Desktop Publishing in College, in the late 1980s, with QuarkXpress and Illustrator 88. My entire working career has revolved around utilization of all the major Desktop Publishing applications, as well as Microsoft Office, in high-pressure deadline situations. I have often been called in to help customers with their own problems utilizing desktop software. Most of my training has been on the job, usually trying to push the envelope of what a specific application can do.
I have worked with QuarkXpress as a primary layout application for 20 years, from beta testing the software at RIT thru using version 8.x in production printing. I have also used Adobe's suite of Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign, as well as Acrobat, in production printing and design environments. I can create internet-submittable forms in Acrobat, perform heavy color correction in Photoshop, build art in Illustrator, and assemble book layouts in InDesign. I also have a solid background running backup operations to safeguard jobs and data.
I have been using Macintosh computers since 1986, both personally and professionally. I am intimate with the interface, and the software that is bundled standard with Macs. I can explain the menus, how to add devices, how to install/uninstall software, how to run system maintenance in the event of malfunctions, how to transfer settings from an old computer to a new computer.
