About Judy

I love teaching and tutoring! I am a recently retired instructor from the College of Central Florida in Ocala, where I taught English and sociology for 25 years. I have also taught in the public school system at the middle school and high school levels. I earned my college degrees at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida: a bachelor's degree in English with public school teaching certification, a master's degree in English with a focus on the teaching of composition, a specialist's degree in teaching (Ed.S), and a master's degree in sociology.

Although I have taught in the classroom and online, I have made a practice of meeting with my students individually whenever possible in order to review their writing assignments one on one and answer any questions they have about my written feedback. Using more than one mode of interaction with students is usually more effective. I was also selected to serve as a volunteer tutor in the Writing Skills Lab on campus. I would describe my tutoring style as casual and non-threatening, not formal or condescending. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and I make sure to inform every student of his or her writing strengths in addition to reviewing the skills a student needs to practice.

I review and comment on essays in detail so that a student has the opportunity to learn everything that will help improve his or her writing ability, focusing first and foremost, of course, on any major writing errors such as fragments, run-ons, and subject-verb agreement errors. I have a thorough grasp of English grammar, yet I always explain grammar rules in a down-to-earth way, minimizing my use of complicated and intimidating grammatical terminology. I treat all students with the utmost respect and patience, realizing that I am in the same boat with them when it comes to the difficulty I myself had in mastering other academic subjects such as math! There is every reason to believe that selecting me as your tutor will be a pleasant and very productive experience.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in English and earned a teaching certificate in secondary English. I have taught English on the middle school, high school, and college levels, primarily grammar and composition courses. I have tutored my own students in my office and other students in a college writing center.

I use a very casual, non-threatening tutoring approach, making use of everyday language instead of intimidating and complex grammatical terminology to explain the principles of grammar and writing. I am thorough in assessing students' strengths and weaknesses. I am patient and use multiple styles of teaching to help students understand a lesson.

Grammar

I hold a bachelor's and a master's degree in English, as well as a specialist's degree (Ed.S) in education from the University of Florida. My bachelor's degree included teacher certification at the secondary level. My master's degree focused on the teaching of composition. I have recently retired with a Professor Emeritus award after twenty-five years of teaching at the college of Central Florida in Ocala, where I also volunteered as a tutor in the Writing Lab. I have since taught a freshman composition course at North Georgia Technical College in Blairsville. I have a thorough grasp of English grammar and am adept at explaining the rules of grammar without using formal grammatical terminology. My tutoring style is casual and non-threatening, taking into account students' primary learning styles.

Proofreading

I am highly proficient as a proofreader and at teaching students how to carefully proofread and edit their writing assignments. I have been proofreading and grading student essays for the past 30 years. I have also been asked by my colleagues to proofread their doctoral dissertations and articles for publication in academic journals.

I have assisted the editorial staff of the college newspaper by proofreading each edition of the newspaper prior to its publication. My tutoring style is casual and non-threatening, making use of everyday language rather than formal grammatical terminology in my explanations of the grammatical and mechanical skills required for conscientious proofreading and editing. I make use of many sample writings in teaching students to proofread.

SAT Writing

I have taught English on the middle school, high school, and college levels, primarily grammar and composition courses. I have tutored my own students in my office and other students in a college writing center.
