About Kierra

Hello, and thank you for clicking on my page! I am a recent college graduate from Georgia State University who has always been interested in learning and teaching foreign languages. As a result, I have studied Applied Linguistics, a field that teaches you how languages work from the inside out. My studies have naturally focused on English grammar and writing but also extends beyond it into knowledge of other languages as well.

To further my studies, I became certified in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) which has helped me learn many useful strategies for teaching individuals who may have never spoken a word of English. I also know the struggle of learning a foreign language firsthand as I have studied Japanese for over two years. Therefore, I know how necessary it is to be kind, understanding and patient towards those who are attempting to learn anything for the first time.

I am interested in tutoring because I have always enjoyed teaching others new things. I also truly find joy in helping my students acquire a skill which can be beneficial in their everyday lives. And while I have limited experience tutoring others, I am dedicated to adapting to your learning needs and growing with you in order to provide the best experience possible.

Please feel free to contact me if you need tutoring for English, either as a native English speaker working on grammar, a foreigner learning English for the first time, or anything in-between. I promise to respond back as soon as possible and work out a schedule with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Macintosh

I have owned Macintosh computers since 2009, and I am still using them on a daily basis. I am very familiar with the more unique aspects of the Mac OS such as the Dock, Dashboard, Launchpad, Mission Control and Spaces. I have also taught others how to navigate the Mac operating system in the past.

Phonics

As an Applied Linguistics major, I have been taught all about phonetics, the sound systems of a language, and have learned the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet). I have also been taught how to integrate phonetic knowledge into the teaching of English. Therefore, I am able to teach others how to draw parallels between words and sounds in order to improve their reading and writing skills.

Piano

I have been playing piano since April 2012. I have knowledge of basic music theory such as note duration, dynamics, tone, pitch, and scales. I also am aware of the distinction between a keyboard, digital piano, upright piano, and grand piano. I have also taken classes in college focused on music theory and piano performance.

Patient and Very Nice

Kierra did an excellent job in finding my daughter's area of difficulty and quickly adjusted her tutoring in that area. Awesome and patient demeanor.
