I am a retired teacher with several years experience teaching students of diverse backgrounds and abilities(including special needs). My passion has always been teaching and I strongly believe that every student has the capacity to learn - some just go at a slower pace, and need someone who will exercise more patience and understanding. I am that someone and I am a great encourager.
Although my area of competence is in English Language (grammar, reading comprehension etc.) as a tutor, I often have to help my students grasp concepts in other subject areas, as well. My focus is to help the student to the best of my ability to master his or her area of challenge.
In addition to being a trained teacher, I hold a masters degree in Counseling Psychology and have taught Psychology at the tertiary level; I also have a doctorate in education. Currently, I tutor students of varying ages, one-on-one in their homes and have also helped students with ACT and SAT preparation in English and Reading.
Not only have I had positive feedback from my students and their parents with regard my inclusive teaching style, but the students themselves have seen improvement in their work which has led to tangible results.
My hallmark, I believe, is that I teach people, not subjects; so I am always mindful of my students' differing learning styles and capabilites. I am committed to serving the students who come under my tutelage and to help them realize their full potential.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The ACT examination, is a national college admissions examination. It is an achievement test that measures the information that a student has learnt in school; and it is accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the USA. It is not an easy exam,but if one prepares adequately and applies oneself, it is not a difficult examination to pass. Students often fail to secure a passing grade because they do not invest the time, dedication and effort that is required to prepare for this examination. Very often students have the misconception that the examination is a "walk over". It is not. Employing a tutor three weeks before the examination, for two hours per week will not achieve the desired results. Tutors are not miracle workers. I would encourage students preparing for the ACT to start their preparation early; doing so will give them a good chance of attaining the grade that will get them into their university/college of choice. Remember the old adage, "you reap what you sow". Consistent hard work and application will definitely move you towards your goal. You can do it!
My teaching experience spans more than thirty years from kindergarten through tertiary. I have worked with students preparing for the ACT and SAT examinations in reading and writing with very good results. Very many of these students seek my help a few weeks before the actual examination, but by focusing on rigorous critical thinking exercises; accurate responses; speed reading; vocabulary, etc. they have been able to sit the exams with a higher level of confidence and do well.
It has been said that the English Language is one of the most difficult languages to learn and understand. This is definitely debatable; however, I believe that if we encourage our children to read more, write well and speak well, then they will find the language less difficult to master. Current methods of communicating, for example texting, the use of mono-syllables and the use of abbreviations outside of those commonly acceptable, have contributed to the decline in proper use of language. It is time for us to recognize that if our children are going to be successful adults they will need to have much more than 'passing acquaintance' with the language. Let us begin to encourage our youth to take pride in the written and spoken word - in fact, we need to insist that they do.
I hold a Master of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology and a doctorate degree in education. I have worked in the field of psychology for several years, counseling children with behavioral challenges, families with marital and various emotional issues, and have taught Adolescent Psychology at the tertiary level. My experience also includes working with students of varying ages who have learning disabilities and crafting appropriate lesson plans to address each particular need. I have also assisted students of psychology with their preparation for examinations and or class presentations with very positive results based on the students' feedback.
