You may have a good reason to become a fluent Spanish speaker, to start learning the language or to build on what you already know. Whether it is an upcoming trip, a business engagement, passing a course or communicating with someone special, I can help you achieve your goal. I am a native speaker of Spanish, I have taught it but I was also in your shoes when I was learning English and then finding my way in French and Portuguese. Because of that, I know how people like you want to learn; in a natural and fluid way with examples that are meaningful to your own experience and interests. I am sure you want to work with a person you will feel comfortable with. I am ready to start when you are!
I am an engineer, recently retired from a career in information systems that included plenty of user training hours, both in the U.S. as well as in many countries in Latin America. I received very positive feedback from the trainees mostly because of my ability to listen to people and to incorporate their suggestions to the learning process. I am relaxed and easy going and I have been told I have a good sense of humor.
I was a volunteer teacher of Spanish for high school students in Toronto, Canada for almost five years. We met on Saturday mornings for two hours throughout the school year. While I always chose a central topic as a vehicle to teach the subjects defined by the curriculum, I was open to change the path to respond to the students’ preferences and to get the expected results, which we did. I later tutored adults on my spare time; and I again adjusted to the individual needs of lawyers and engineers with great results. This is still the way I want to teach you.
There are three key components you may need to know in a language: how to speak, including the correct pronunciation, how to read and how to write in a way you get your message across. You may not need all of them at one point so you may define your priorities. It may sound like a lot but it may be easy and fun if you do it the same way you learned English – though I don’t think you remember those days -starting with simple words and putting them together in sentences while you learn grammar and verbs without even noticing. We will advance together with a central plan that can be tweaked according to your priorities.
My approach is to first meet with you to review your motivations and goals. During the conversation I will perform an evaluation of what you know and what you need to learn to advance to where you want to be. As our ‘knowledge exchange meetings’ progress, we will regularly evaluate your improvement and decide on any rerouting that may be needed to meet your objectives.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a native speaker of Spanish. During my career as an Engineer I was called to travel to almost every country in South America and Spain, which allowed me to learn even more about my language and many cultural aspects. I like to share them as needed throughout the classes to make the learning process more dynamic.
