About Bonita

I am a teacher by nature. I love to see the "light bulb moments" in the eyes of my students. I have a passion for teaching Basic Math, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra 1. I can also tutor in Basic Geometry. I have tutored many students in math and algebra, including college level algebra for adult learners. I started my career in math education, then after raising two children, went back to the school system working with children on the autism spectrum. I have become fond of this population and have an understanding of what they need to succeed.

Since receiving my Master of Social Work degree 2 years ago, I have been concentrating my efforts on improving a child's behavior by working with and training parents on how to handle children who have high IQ's but present as younger emotionally. These cases can be challenging and complex which is what motivates me to find a solution to any dilemma.

I taught for 2 years in a classroom teaching Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 to 9th and 10th grade students; 10+ years of private tutoring in general math, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra 1; then, I have spent the last 13 years with a public school system working directly with students on the autism spectrum, implementing IEP goals, and developing lesson plans in all elementary level subjects. I have experience in direct instruction as a 1-on-1 facilitator for students with Asperger's Syndrome who also had high anxiety and severe negative behaviors.

I am an avid knitter. I have knitted many sweaters, afghans, and other items. I can read patterns and know many kinds of stitches. I am proficient in altering patterns to custom fit the wearer. I also know how to crochet and read crochet patterns. I can sew and know basic skills in laying out patterns and using a sewing machine. In addition, I have experience with cross-stitch and embroidery.

I am self-employed and my schedule is flexible. I work well with people because I start by understanding where they are in the learning process, then bring them to where they need to be in relation to what their goals are. If you are struggling with math skills, I can help. If you are overwhelmed with your life as a parent, I can teach you the skills that will empower you to get control of your kids, your family, and your life.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

13 years as a para-educator in elementary and middle school classroom. I have been trained in and used ABA teaching methods to assist students in achieving IEP goals. I have a para-educator certification. I also have a Master's degree in Social Work. I am a Licensed Master Social Worker and am working on obtaining the necessary hours to obtain my clinical license (LCSW).

Needlework

I have been knitting and crocheting for over 30 years. I knit many sweaters, afghans, and other items for friends and family members as gifts. I have been commissioned by associates to design and make custom sweaters. My math background is beneficial when adjusting patterns for stitch gauge, needle size, yarn thickness, and custom sizing. I regularly reconfigure patterns so that they will custom fit the wearer.
